My Motivation
Who is Involved?
  • My Motivation and Goal
  • I want to make a difference in this world.
  • For someone. It is as simple as that.
  • It is not easy to break out of the social circle
you were born into, whatever that might be. But
it is even harder in the underprivileged classes.
  • Having lived so far in 4 different countries, I
have seen people of many walks of life people
with the most diverse backgrounds, upbringings,
    knowledge, resources, educations, opinions and
    dreams.
  • The ONE thing that ALWAYS seems to make a
difference is EDUCATION - no matter where you
are, no matter what situation you are in.
Education leads to more knowledge and resources
and networks and empowerment. I have seen
first-hand what a difference education can make
    in peoples lives.
  • But there are many people, who want their
children to have a better life, to leap ahead,
but due to their economic situation, their kids
are almost doomed to live more or less in the
same sad situation as the parents did. I want to
change that for a handful of kids and their
    families.
  • I hope that this effort will eventually go beyond
the two kids that I am currently working with. I
would like to see this initiative go so far as to
allow 5-6 kids annually to go to BYU and change
their lives and their families lives forever.

ONE Makes a Difference
  • Marcela EDUARDO
  • YOB 1988
  • Intends to enter BYU Fall 2007
  • Intended major Psychology
  • HS grad June 2006,
  • Background
  • I was impressed especially with the drive, the
dreams and ambitions of this girl and her mother
in Mexico City. She is a great A- type of
student who just finished high school. She has a
brother on a mission and a sister who works at
    Wal-Mart for approximately 1.20 / hour. Wages
are very low. And life in Mexico City is not
cheap as many might think. This familys income
is approximately 800 / month with both parents
working, not counting the older sisters income.
And yet, the mother approached me 2-3 times
timidly asking if I had any information on BYU
and if it might, by any miracle, be possible to
send her daughter to school there. I was up for
a challenge. She is currently taking English
classes to prepare for the TOEFL and ACT and I am
working on filling out the application with her.
Meanwhile her parents are saving what they can,
hoping to be able to send her to BYU.

  • Eli DIAZ
  • YOB
  • Intends to enter BYU Winter 2008
  • Intended major International Business
  • HS grad
  • Background
  • His mother got interested when I told her about
this girl who is dreaming big. She said, Can
Eli go, too? I said, just like to the other It
would be difficult, but we can certainly try.
Eli is currently on a mission in Oaxaca, Mexico,
finishing in Dec 2006. His mother is studying to
become a doctor since she is basically winning
the bread in the family. The two older sisters
are married but the younger brother and the
grandmother are still at home and the brother is
finishing high school at a private school in
Mexico City. I admire the mother for the drive
she has had trying everything all her life to
earn a living for the family from knitting
sweaters to opening a mini-store for natural
health products to now going back to school to
become a doctor of acupuncture. When she
finishes her degree she will be able to charge
about 15 UD per visit. Upon Elis return, he
has already committed to taking 2 English classes
to prepare for the TOEFL and BYU and to find a
job and work hard. A paper version of the BYU
application is on the way to his mission so he
    can start filling it out.

  • The Requirements
  • To qualify the girl or boy needs to
  • Be a member of the Church (or willing to abide by
    all BYU standards)
  • Be a high school student with an A to B average
  • Have 1-3 years left before planning on entering
    the University

sufficiently low that it basically does NOT

change through hard work and sacrifice IS
possible, same applies to the parents
  • Committed to this cause
  • After finishing their degree pay into this fund
to pass this chance on to someone else (The

they can during their stay at BYU
  • Work 10 hrs/wk during semester, starting 2nd
semester, and 30 hrs in summer

ONE Makes a Difference
  • The biggest Question at hand is
  • IS IT REALLY POSSIBLE???
  • From my experience as an International student at
BYU and working at the International Office
there, the majority of International Students do
NOT have sufficient finances to make it through
school, but SOMEHOW, they all survive and make
it. And for many, these years of struggle make
all the difference in their later lives.
  • I did a lot of calculations and told the two
families the naked facts. It is only possible
with many unknowns miraculously coming into
place. We need to find a family for Marcela and
Eli to live with who provide room and board. Or,
try to get them into the foreign language house
maybe as a native speaker if we dont find a
family. they need to get a half to full
scholarship and keep it. And they need to work
on campus during school and vacations. Possibly,
visits to their parents wont happen more than
once during their studies. The parents need to
save 200/month and the prospective student
    100-150 dollars/month until he/she goes, in order
to make the first year at least possible.
  • You can imagine what that means for them. But
despite all this, both mothers and students
accepted the challenge, and so did I in helping
them make their vision and ambitions come true.
The calculations I made and presented to them,
    you can request here.

Questions Comments
  • I think it is important for them all to try to
put in all they can, to save and work and make
any effort they possibly can. That makes them
feel they achieved this too, and will not slack
off afterwards. That is why the candidates need
to be ambitious and have the vision to do this to
begin with. But the fact remains the kids I want
to help, will be able to make only a small
contribution and wont be able to prove the
finances on their own. THEY NEED HELP. And many
do, but I need to start somewhere.
  • My plea goes out to everyone who is willing to
    help to PLEASE HELP !
  • After all the calculations and speculating with
the very necessary scholarships they need to
qualify for, I need to round up approximately
    5000 Dollars each.
  • Now what does that mean in terms of donations
    necessary???
  • 100x 100 200x 50 400x 25
  • 1000x 10 10000x 1
  • Bedding, living essentials, air plane tickets

For most of us, these amounts are not very much.
We often spend this on a meal at a Fast Food
place as a single person or family. But spare
that one meal, just once, and donate the amount
instead and you can make a SERIOUS difference in
someones life!

ONE Makes a Difference
My Motivation
  • My own background
  • I never had the desire, growing up, to go study
at a university. Growing up in Germany I felt
for myself the best choice was an apprenticeship
after high school. To pick a job that sounds
interesting and get that 3 yr. job training
through an apprenticeship in a reputable company.
  • Fate would have it otherwise with me though. I
became friends with a very kindly stubborn girl
and her companion who challenged me to apply to a
university in the USA. I said Why would I do a
thing like that when I could - if I really wanted
to - go to university for free in Germany? I
applied on a whim, thinking they wont accept me
anyhow and the 25 application fee wont hurt my
finances. At least, I thought, that will end the
    nagging and nudging.
  • I was working for an international train maker as
a secretary without formal training at the time.
I could have made that a career. I was earning
well and was even up for a promotion and
international relocation, but the fact remains
that in Germany a diploma or a finished
apprenticeship is sort of a necessity if you want
to ensure your future employment. In any case I
thought I didnt have anything to lose and
applied. A few months later, for some strange,
inexplicable reason they sent me an acceptance
letter for Jan 1997. I was shocked and baffled,
didnt know what to do or say. So I bought a
plain ticket, quit my job and went to college in
    Dec. 1996.
  • I graduated due to a medical detour with a
Bachelors Degree in Geography in April 2001 and
consequently went through the Management Training
Program at Wal-Mart USA before getting married in
May 2003 and becoming a mother to 2 beautiful
sons over the next 3 years. From UT I moved to CA
with my husband, then to Mexico City then to Sao
Paulo where we have already been for 6 months now.
