Title: LEADERSHIP FOR TECHNOLOGY IN THE ORGANIZATION

LEADERSHIP FOR TECHNOLOGY IN THE ORGANIZATION
  • Robert L. Monson
  • TTLSA
  • June 2003

2
Systems Thinking
  • Process Mapping
  • Technologically, which direction do you want your
    organization to be going?
  • Maintain
  • Regress
  • Advance

3
As a leader, have you ever felt like this?
4
Process Diagrams
  • Think about your current organization
  • Your task is to design a Process Diagram for how
    things happen in your building/district
  • Are they top down?
  • Are decisions shared?
  • Is it financially driven?
  • 10 minutes to do a combined table drawing

This diagram is extremely linear. When the end
is reached, that is pretty much the end.
We tell the teachers they are to integrate
technology. They luke-warmly do something with
Word, they report back to you they did it, they
are now done with their task.

PLAN
  • Business Book Buddies was something I had wanted
to do, and something one of my teachers wanted to
    take on as a goal
  • Other grade level teachers were brought into be a
    part of the project
  • We looked at how a similar project was done in
    another community
  • We adapted and changed what we felt was important
    for our parents and students

8
DO
  • Carried out our first Business Book Buddies event
  • Had parents fill out surveys
  • Immediately talked after the event was over

9
STUDY
  • We met again within one week of our first event
  • We looked at the feedback from the event
  • We reviewed the tape of the staff to see how we
    did
  • We critiqued each other in a positive light

10
ACT
  • We made changes based on data
  • We took the input from the surveys and looked at
what would be important at our next event
  • We tried to incorporate what parents really
    wanted from us
  • We wanted a win-win-win situation

WHAT YOU DONT SEE.
12
CAN ACTUALLY HELP YOU!
13
What To Expect As You Build Shared Vision
  • New challenges for the leader
  • From beating dead horses to steering wild
    mustangs
  • Momentum from previous successes
  • Do not rest too long or you will have to reset
  • Keeping the vision fluid
  • Dont print anything in permanent ink

14
What To Expect As You Build Shared Vision
  • Aligning the entire work force
  • Suddenly everyone is going in the same direction
  • Those that arent will alienate themselves
  • Best way to be a leader.
  • Find out which direction the crowd is going, and
run like hell to get to the front!

15
What if they would have had Shared Vision?
  • Challenger may not have exploded had they
listened to the engineers who said there was
    trouble with the O rings
  • 911 may have been averted had they listened to
    the FBI agent in Minneapolis
  • Your school may not have lost those students
    because.

16
And most importantly, as you begin to lead your
staff down that treacherous path, and face the
challenges of NCLB, remember one thing..
17
LEAVE NO PRESIDENT BEHIND!
