Title: AWARENESS ON LASIK

1
AWARENESSON LASIK
2
THE HUMAN EYE

The cornea is that transparent part of the eye
that helps focus rays of light on the retina to
create an image. Its working is similar to that
of the lens of a camera, focusing rays of light
to create an image on the film. The bending and
focusing of light to create the image is known as
refraction. When the light rays perfectly focus
on the retina, the individual does not need to
wear spectacles.
3
MYOPIA (SHORT-SIGHTEDNESS)
  • It this condition the rays of light focus in
    front of the retina.
  • Persons with myopia or near sightedness, have
more difficulty seeing distant objects compared
    to near objects.

4
HYPERMETROPIA (LONG-SIGHTEDNESS)
  • It this condition the rays of light focus behind
    the retina.
  • Persons with hypermetropia or far sightedness,
have more difficulty seeing near objects compared
    to distant objects.

5
ASTIGMATISM
  • In this condition, the rays of light do not come
to a point focus upon the retina. It is a
distorted image on the retina caused by
irregularities in the cornea or lens of the eye.

LASIK LASIK is a
painless,patchless 15 minutes procedure which
aims at permanently altering the focusing power
of the eye by reshaping the corneal surface with
the laser light.
8
  • You are a good candidate for LASIK if
  • There is no constant change in your number.
  • You should be above 18years.
  • There should be no hormonal level fluctuations in
    cases of diabetes, pregnancy, etc
  • In short, LASIK is done on eyes where the
    refractive errors are STABLE

9
Prior to LASIK evaluation, you will need to
discontinue the use of contact lens as under
  • Soft contact lenses Discontinue the wear for at
    least 48-72 hours
  • Rigid gas permeable (RGP/ semi soft) lenses-
    Discontinue the wear for 15days.

10
The LASIK evaluation which takes around 15-20mins
includes special tests like-
1. Corneal topography- To evaluate the shape
of the corneal surface. 2. Pachymetry- To
measure the thickness of the cornea.
11
LASIK THE PROCEDURE
12
1. Anesthetic drops are used and a lid
speculum is used to hold your eyelids wide
open. 2. No injections are used and you will
not feel any pain, only some discomfort may be
felt. 3. A ring is placed on your eye and a
slight pressure will be applied to create suction.

CORNEAL RING
13
  • 4. Your doctor will then make a corneal flap.
  • 5. The suction ring is removed.
  • 6. The doctor will then lift the flap and hold
it back on its hinge and dry the exposed tissue.

7. The laser beam will then be focused over
your eye and you will be asked to stare at a
green blinking light. This light is to help you
to fixate your eyes on one spot, once the laser
is started. 8. The laser light will reshape the
cornea. 9. A computer controls the amount of
laser energy delivered to your eye.

15
  • The flap is put back into position.
  • A black goggle will be placed over your eye at
the end of the procedure to protect your eyes
  • There are no stitches.

  • These are very common post operative temporary
symptoms and get easily cured by use of
    medications for some time.

17
CARE AFTER LASIK SURGERY
18
  • FOR ONE DAY -
  • WEAR DARK GOGGLES
  • FOR TWO WEEKS -
  • NO MAKE- UP
  • NO STRENUOUS EXERCISE OR CONTACT SPORTS
  • NO SWIMMING,JACCUZZI OR HOT TUB

19
  • POST LASIK SYMPTOMS
  • Haloes Around Alphabets
  • Glare
  • Dryness
  • These are again temporary in nature we get
    used to it over time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
21
1) The number for reading glasses/near vision
(presbyopia) is treated LASIK?
Correction of this type of spectacle
number is being worked out in various research
centers but as of today presbyopia cannot be
corrected by laser procedure. All patients who
have been operated for refractive surgery will
get presbyopic glasses due to normal aging
processes around the age of 40 yrs. However
presbyopia can be taken care by using the
concepts of monovision where one is corrected for
distance vision and other for near vision. 2)
Will I ever need glasses?
The goal of LASIK is to correct the refractive
error and improve the vision. If a small degree
of refractive error persists after the procedure.
A re-treatment (enhancement procedure) can be
done in selected cases.
22
3) Will my refractive error revert to the
original over a period of time?
The chances of regression are almost
nil by this procedure but if it occurs it can be
re-treated in selected cases. 4) Are both eyes
done at the same time?
Generally both eyes are treated at the same
time but in very anxious/nervous patients one eye
is done at a time. 5) What is the duration of
the procedure?
It takes around 10 minutes per eye and you can go
home within 1-1 ½ hour.
23
6) When can I go back to work?
You can go back to work within 24-48
hours. 7) How safe is the procedure?
It is a reasonably safe procedure.
If at all problems occur they will be minor and
not visually significant.
