Introduction-1
  • Nationalism-the war of 1812 had inspired pride in
the nation over the victory at New Orleans. Art
and Literature became more American. Patriotism
increased. General Lafayettes U.S. tour was
cheered by all in 1824. John Adams(Thomas
    Jefferson still lives.)and Thomas Jefferson(Is
this the 4th?) both died on July 4, 1826. 50
years exactly after the D of I.

Economics Social-2
  • Economics-Age of Canals-1815-1840 followed by
the Age of Railroads. Erie was the most famous
canal and John Stevenson applied the steam engine
to make trains. This was also an age of turnpike
    building.
  • Westward Movement-not only to the SW and NW, but
to the far West. The Oregon trail opened in the
1820s and people also started the move to Texas.

Politics-3
  • Madison-his term did not end with the end of the
war. He admitted Hamilton was right when he
rechartered the Bank of the US in 1816, repassed
the excise tax, and increased the tariff with the
Tariff of 1816. We now had a protective tariff
for the first time. Madison went on good will
tours of the country to patch up the division
which had occurred during the War. Madison
    supported Monroe to follow him.

Monroe Administration-4
  • James Monroe-elected in 1816 and reelected in
    1820-also a popular president.
  • Achievements-1. Florida Treaty, 1819-negotiated
by J.Q. Adams, his Secretary of State. We took
FL and paid claims U.S. citizens had against
Spain in GA AL 2. Treaty of 1818-boundary
settled between U.S. Canada except for Maine.
    3. Monroe Doctrine-1823-U.S. became the protector
of South America. Europeans to keep out!

Politics-6
  • Clay, 47,000-37-The election had to be settled in
the House where Clay was Speaker. He supported
Adams in what became known as the Corrupt
Bargain Clay became Secretary of State and
Adams accomplished almost nothing because of the
corruption charge. Tariff of 1828 called the
tariff of abominations. All four years were a
    campaign for Jacksons revenge.

the party after the inauguration. Several
