2
Outline of Presentation
  • Problem Statement
  • Background Information
  • Product Design Specification
  • Proposed Interface Design
  • Proposed Software Design
  • Future Work
  • Questions

3
Problem Statement
  • To develop an interactive, web-based
strengthening and testing program for patients
with multiple sclerosis-induced hand weakness for
use in the home. The program will focus on the
lateral pinch exercise and be user-friendly for
    new or inexperienced users.

4
Background Information
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Myelin damaged
  • Scar tissue called sclerosis

5
Epidemiology
  • Northern climates
  • Twice as many women as men
  • Ages 20-40

6
Possible Factors
  • Genetic
  • Environmental
  • Infectious agents

7
Treatments
  • Methylprednisolone
  • Immunomodulatory
  • Exercise

8
Treatment of Hand Tremors
  • Daily practice and monitoring
  • Currently all tests occur in a hospital setting
    using
  • DOS program
  • Transducer
  • Amplifier
  • Signal generator

9
Control Test
  • Line produced by patient matches stationary line

10
Strength and Speed Test
  • Patients squeezes the pinch as hard as possible
    as quickly as possible
  • Tests the patients maximum strength as well
their ability to reach the maximum

11
Motivation
  • The importance of regular testing for effective
    treatment
  • Cost of testing
  • Transportation issues

12
Product Design Specification
  • Assume patients have home computers with at least
    dial-up Internet access
  • Monitor performance using software
  • Send data to UW Neurology Dept. server
  • Manual needed
  • Absence of computer vernacular essential
  • Audio and visual guidance

13
Information Pathway
14
Proposed Interface Solution
  • Physical Set-up
  • Manual
  • Interface

15
Physical Setup
16
Manual
  • Spiral bound
  • Glossary
  • Web version
  • Simple instruction

17
Interface
  • Patients perspective
  • Simulation

18
Future Work
  • Combine the subgroups
  • Code the interface program
  • Test

19
Questions?
20
Software Implementation(specifications)
  • The program must record convert incoming data
from a transducer (via USB port).
  • Data needs to be calibrated from electrical input
    to represent force.
  • After the conversion, the numeric values of load
applied will be plotted vs. time.
  • Information must be made available for physicians
    to analyze.

21
Design Alternatives
  • 1. Client-Based Programming
  • 2. Web-Based Programming

22
Client-Based Application
  • Visual Basic or Java application on hard drive
    direct patient through test.
  • Test data processed and stored locally.
  • Application linked to Neurology database with
    ADO.net.

23
Client-Based (cont.)
  • Advantages
  • Faster more powerful
  • Can include more graphics accessories
  • Compatible with 56K modem
  • Disadvantages
  • Harder to update
  • Application can crash

24
Web-Based Application
  • Program which instructs patient located on
    website.
  • Written using server-side programming languages
  • JAVA HTML PEARL
  • Run and directly accessed by Neurology server

25
Web-Based (cont.)
  • Advantages
  • Accessible anywhere
  • Updating can be done at one place
  • Disadvantages
  • JAVA applets/ JavaScript have difficulty
    accessing USB ports.
  • Slower
  • Cannot support much graphics
  • Internet or server can crash

26
(No Transcript)
27
Proposed Design
  • Excellent Security
  • More Compatible to application
  • Accessible to USB port
  • Faster
  • Better graphics/dynamics
