Title: Web Recruiting as stated back in July 2000

Web Recruiting as stated back in July 2000
  • In this flourishing job market - with the average
    Net-economy employee bringing home 83,000 - you
can be sure that prospective employees are
combing the Web looking for their chance to cash
in. In July, more than 13 million people visited
career sites, according to Media Metrix. But
although the Internet is increasingly popular as
a career development and business recruitment
tool, it has yet to fulfill its potential.

  • On the business side, online recruiting is both a
blessing and a curse to human resources
departments. Hiring an employee via the Web costs
significantly less than traditional methods such
as temp agencies - an average of 183 per
employee for Web recruiting vs. 1,383 for more
    traditional recruiting, according to Thomas
Weisel Partners. But the flood of resumes that
swamp HR departments via the Internet may
increase costs because of the hours it takes to
    sort through them.

  • Regardless, results seem strong enough for
companies to increase spending for online
recruiting by 52 percent and cut spending for
print ads by 31 percent by 2004, according to
    Forrester Research. Jupiter Communications also
predicts a significant spending shift. Almost 8
    percent of revenues from offline-recruitment
classified-advertising will be transferred to the
Internet by 2005, driven largely by potential
cost savings from electronic processing and the
ability to reach a highly skilled online
    population.

  • The Internet is also becoming a popular resource
for career development. A recent survey by
Greenfield Online shows that 75 percent of people
online have used the Internet to search for a
job. And 61 percent of Net surfers who have
submitted their resume to companies with online
job postings have received at least one request
for an interview. Even so, very few people have
yet to find a job through the Internet. Personal
referrals and newspaper ads still account for the
majority of job placements. Only 4 percent of
people online report that they landed their job
via the Internet. And just one-fifth of online
job-seekers report being satisfied with the
    quality of Internet job postings.

  • Despite the disappointing offerings so far,
surfers are willing to continue to take a chance
on Net career resources 67 percent of Net
surfers expect to conduct most of their next job
search online, according to Greenfield Online.
And over the last year, job listings at several
top sites have doubled. With plenty of listings
and job-seekers, it remains to be seen if the
Internet can become efficient at creating the
    right fit.
