Title: Salary Negotiation
1Salary Negotiation
2Determine going market salary rate for your
position
Research
- NACE Salary Survey CSEL
- Job Listings of similar positions
- Friends and networking contacts
- Trade journals
- Salary.com
- CSELs Website EChoices
- ONET
- Occupational Outlook Handbook
3How much do you really need?
- Prepare a budget and know
- What you WANT to earn
- What you NEED to earn
- What you will ACCEPT
- Document your skills and accomplishments (know
what you bring to the table)
4Dont forget about benefits
- Remember your compensation includes more than
just your salary it would usually include - Health Insurance, Dental Insurance, Disability
Insurance - Life Insurance, Paid vacation time, Paid sick
time - Paid Holidays
5Dont forget about benefits
- Could also include (these may be negotiable)
- Bonuses
- The date of your first review
- Child and day-care services
- Continuing Education and training services
- Flexible work schedule
- Professional membership dues
- Profit sharing plans, stock options
- Relocation expenses
- Retirement plans
6How do you talk
You do not want to be the one to talk about
salary first
- Do not lie about previous salary
- Concentrate initial discussions on skills and
qualifications - When you do agree on a salary and they offer you
the position, get it in writing
7Things you could say
- My research indicates that the typical salary
range for this position is _______to _______.
I feel that in light of my __________
(qualifications, education, experience,
accomplishments), I would be qualified for a
salary around ___________. (give in a range)
8Things you could say (cont.)
- Summarize the requirements for the position as
you understand them and then ask the interviewer
for the normal salary range in his/her company
for that type of position. - You would prefer learning more about the current
position before you discuss compensation, and
that you are confident you will be able to reach
a mutual agreement about salary at that time.
9Things you could say (cont.)
- If given one range and it is not near what you
were expecting tell them what your range is and
place the bottom of your range at the top of
theirs. (Your range needs to be in line with
your research.) - When a salary is quoted try not to react either
way, look like you are thinking about it
silence is o.k. If they do not increase offer,
try the tactic mentioned above.
