Title: TRINNODD

1
  • TRINNODD
  • TRansfer of INNOvation on Dual Diagnosis
  • (LU/08/LLP-LDV/TOI-156002)

2
1. Introduction
  • TRINNODD is a 2-year Transfer of Innovation
Project funded by the Leonardo da Vinci Lifelong
    Learning Programme (2008-2010).
  • What do we want to transfer ?
  • The project aims to transfer the results of a
previous project funded by the European
Commission and entitled TRIADD, to new contexts
and countries. This former project developed
training modules on the theme of Dual Diagnosis
    (mental illness and intellectual disability).
  • In the TRIADD project, the partnership conducted
surveys into staff training needs, researched
resources useful to staff, devised a number of
training courses to address these needs,
delivered these 3-day training courses based on
real case studies, circulated a follow-up
questionnaire to trainees and set up a website
offering resources to staff in English and
    French. www.triadd.lu
  • The TRIADD conclusions and recommendations are
the starting point of the TRINNODD project and
will help the partnership design the new modules.

3
2. Key goals
  • The aims of this new project are the following
  • Make a link between the recent research results
and the concrete experience of frontline staff
  • Develop a new and interactive training material
with the help of research partners
  • This training material will focus on the needs
of users and on the improvement of their quality
    of life
  • Transfer this new training product to new target
groups and in new geographical and cultural
    realities
  • Develop an evaluation tool to measure the short
and long-term impact of the training modules

4
3.Main phases of the project
  • WP 1 ANALYSIS OF STAFF AND USERS NEEDS IN NEW
    TARGET COUNTRIES
  • Ascertain the needs of staff and users as to how
to deal with Dual Diagnosis in new partner
    countries (Portugal, Romania, Spain, Italy)
  • WP 2 DEVELOPMENT OF TRAINING MODULES
  • Develop a training module in every new partner
    country.
  • Draw on the results of WP1 and on TRIADDs
conclusions, as well as on recent research
results brought by our partners from SIRM and
AEECRM (associations for the scientific study of
    mental retardation).
  • WP 3 TESTING THE TRAINING MODULES
  • Test the new training modules on target groups
    in PT, RO, IT, SP

5
  • WP 4 EVALUATION OF TRAINING MODULES
  • The pedagogical incidence and the impact on
staff work will be assessed in three steps
  • Evaluation of the impact on the training
    directly after the training session.
  • Evaluation of the impact of the training 6
    months after the training session.
  • Final evaluation of the level of satisfaction of
users and their families and of the quality of
life of professionals, users and their families.
  • The impact of the training will be assessed
according to the social, organisational and
political context of each staff member.
  • These evaluations will be carried out through
    informal interviews, work in progress
    discussions, written reports.

6
  • WP 5 PROJECT COORDINATION AND EVALUATION
  • Regular coordination meetings in the different
    partner countries
  • Teleconferences
  • Communication/ follow-up with partners by e-mail
    and telephone
  • The internal evaluation is being carried out by
the coordinating partner (APEMH) and by SIRM
  • The external evaluation is being carried out by
    an external consultant

7
  • WP 6 VALORISATION PLAN DISSEMINATION AND
    EXPLOITATION OF RESULTS
  • Valorisation activities will be carried out
during the whole lifetime of the project.
  • An important budget amount will be devoted to
the valorisation plan, in order to reach as many
    target groups as possible.
  • The products planned for valorisation are the
    following
  • In one of the first coordination meetings,
partners will focus on the update of the TRIADD
website, since this project is a  Transfer of
Innovation , a transfer of the TRIADD results to
new realities. The new website -in French and
    English- will be regularly updated.
  • A newsletter presenting the project aims and
progress will be printed and disseminated among
partners halfway and 6 months before the final
    conference.

8
  • A brochure and CD-Rom with the project outcomes
and recommendations will be published at the end
    of the project
  • A final dissemination conference will be
organised in Romania. This will be an excellent
opportunity to disseminate the project and the
recent evolutions in the disability field in a
    new member country.
  • The new training modules will be available for
dissemination via the partnership and on the
    website.
  • Each partner will publicize the project results
in their own country, and also through their
    European and international network.
  • Project delegates will represent the partnership
in the MH-ID international conference in
    Amsterdam in September 2009 http//www.amsterdamco
    ngress2009.org/Welcome.html
  • Last but not least, the project coordination
team will think about new ways of disseminating
the project results  ie a one-day meeting to
share good practices with service providers,
presentations in training centres for social
    workers (to be discussed).

9
4. Outputs so far
  • WP 1 Analysis of staff and users needs
  • The surveys carried out in Portugal, Spain,
Romania, Italy and Luxembourg were presented in
the partners meeting in Lisbon in February 2009.
  • In Portugal 128 questionnaires were filled in
by professionals (56), family members (31) and
people with disabilities (41). The surveys
expressed the need for training on basic notions
of DD, sex education, quality of life, personal
    growth and development, leisure time.
  • In Italy 61 questionnaires were answered by 31
professionals, 30 family members, 3 persons with
disabilities. The topics that could be more
useful in their daily work with people with
disabilities would be technical knowledge of
    Dual Diagnosis, interpersonal skills, better
    knowledge of Dual Diagnosis, communication
    techniques.

10
  • In Romania It is important to note that the
Quality of Life concept is new in Romania.
Support workers show a lack of motivation to
teach families how to take care of people with
Dual Diagnosis as they are themselves
dissatisfied with their own lives. When answering
the questionnaire, staff members said that the
most useful topics for training would be
    communication techniques, nursing /care,
    supervision.
  • In Spain 105 questionnaires were filled in by
54 support workers, 51 families and 6 users.
Problem solving, types of treatment and stress
management were among the topics needed for
    training.

11
  • In Luxembourg No training is foreseen in
Luxembourg with the TRINNODD project  however
the questionnaires were distributed among staff
within Apemh  - notably those who already
followed the TRIADD module a few years ago. A
total of 76 people were contacted. 7 completed
    questionnaires were returned (9,21). The
questionnaires were answered mainly by women
whose current occupation is Aide socio
familiale. The topics more useful in their daily
work with PDD would be communication,
difficulties of co-operation between people with
DD and people with a psychiatric disorder and no
mental disability. The topics for training that
staff would need life-span approach, basic
knowledge of DD, psychiatric disorders, knowledge
    of the symptoms, communication.

12
  • WP2 Development of training modules
  • The synthesis of the needs assessment (WP1), the
    TRIADD guidelines/conclusions/ recommendations
and the results drawn from recent research
studies were the starting point to develop the
    new training modules.
  • The aim was to develop a training module that
would raise the interest and curiosity of the
professionals on the subject. This training
should be an ongoing process, with preparation
before the session and after it. Professionals
will be made more aware of the concept of Quality
of life (this concept is different in Romania and
    Italy, for instance).
  • Staff should be very much engaged in the
training sessions which, in order to be most
effective, should reach them personally, through
concrete cases that will have a real impact.

13
  • A draft proposal was designed by partners as a
common framework addressing a number of issues
identified within the partnership. Within this
framework, the following subjects were identified
as recommendations for the development of
    training courses
  • ?Consider 4 main innovative dimensions
    (emotional-technical-methodological-quality of
    life approach)
  • ?Learn to detect early warning signs
  • ?Preparatory work of trainees before the
    training session
  • ?Interactivity during the training session
  • ?Involve psychiatrists in the training session
  • ?Effective communication between staff members
    and with families
  • ?Provide general recommendations on how to apply
    pharmacological intervention
  • ?Give trainees precise reference points to
    interpret and assess Challenging Behaviour

14
  • WP3 Testing the training modules in 4 partner
    countries
  • Partners are currently developing the modules
and setting up the pre-training and the training
    session in their respective countries.
