3 Project Objectives The purpose of the project
is to develop an integrated approach (IA) for
identifying regional vulnerabilities to climate
variations and change, and for prioritising
adaptation options to deal with climate change
vulnerability. In particular, the project will
addresses the following questions 1) How
vulnerable is Western China to current climate
variations and future climate change in some key
sectors? 2) What can the vulnerabilities of
these key sectors to present climate variations
teach us about future vulnerability? And 3) What
are the desirable adaptation options to deal
effectively with future climate changes?
4Project Update
- AS25 was endorsed by Chinese GEF Office in Aug.
2003 - Held the first team, Steering Committee and
Expert Committee meeting on 25 Nov. 2003 - Climate scenario design has been proceeded
according to the proposed schedule (data are
required now) - Other research activities on vulnerability and
adaptation assessment are now under way in Heihe
Region - In view of the exceptional circumstances, a
request of extension to the end of 2005 was put
to AIACC and was approved - A special arrangement for Yin (Co-PI) to work in
China during the FY2004/05 to achieve completion
of the project has been approved by senior
management of EC.
5Updated Achievements
- Participating in training workshops sponsored by
AIACC on scenarios, vulnerability and adaptation
assessment in the summer of 2002 - Participating in AIACC workshops in Nairobi,
Bangkok and Manila in Feb. 2002, March 2003 and
Nov. 2004 respectively - Undertaken a training workshop in Lanzhou (shared
with a CIDA project) and a team meeting in
Nanjing in summer of 2002 - Identified regional concerns in resource
management and climate stresses - Trained young scientists and graduate students to
design and apply IA methods in a real world
context and - Holding a meeting in Lanzhou in October 2004 to
review current status of research activities on
vulnerability and adaptation assessment, and to
discuss methodological issues. -

- Young scientists were trained at a workshop
(shared with the CIDA Carbon Sequestration
project) to apply computer based models to assess
climate change impacts and to evaluate adaptation
options. - The workshop also involved multi-stakeholder and
experts to present their concerns and suggestions
on climate and resource related issues. - Many farmers were interviewed individually and
asked to complete a survey in a one-on-one
interview or in a small group workshop-type
setting in Heihe region during summer of 2002.
