2003 GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) A
California condor has hatched at the Grand Canyon
-- the first condor born in the wild in Arizona
in decades, officials said Monday. The existence
of the condor nestling was confirmed Saturday by
biologists from the park and the Peregrine Fund,
a nonprofit group that helped spearhead the giant
birds' reintroduction to the wild. California
condors were reintroduced into the wild in
Arizona in 1996. The nestling discovered over the
weekend near the top of a 400-foot cliff in the
Salt Creek drainage was the first in Arizona
since the reintroduction it was the second
surviving nestling overall. "This indeed marks a
monumental event in the restoration of the condor
to the Colorado Plateau," said Joseph Alton,
Grand Canyon National Park superintendent, in a
written statement.
