- Born in Urbino, Italy on April 6, 1483.
- Birth name was Raffaello Sanzi then later changed
to his baptismal name Raphael. - Mother died in 1491 and his father died in 1494
orphaning Raphael at age 11. - First documented piece was an altarpiece for the
church of San Nicola and was done at the age of
17.

- Raphael was most influential in Italy in the
cities of Rome and Florence. - In Rome he was the most influential of all
painters as he was given the title of Prince of
painters.

animation. - Raphael was inferior to both Michelangelo and
Titian. - Part of the Big three which consisted of

during the Italian Renaissance. - Even though he died young in his 37 years from
1483 to 1520 he was influential on painting from
that point on. - Raphael even with other big name painters out
there stood out during the Italian Renaissance.

- Raphael was one of the top painters and he pushed
painting to its limits. - Worked under the pope and this led many people to
become Christians from having a great figure in
public working for the pope. - Brought back Greek ideas by painting Greek gods
in the Vatican Palace.

11Effect on Renaissance Cont.
- Raphael was so popular he became director of all
the excavations in and near Rome. - Designed and had decorations for many churches in
Italy. - Had many followers who followed in his footsteps
including his most famous follower, Giulio
Romano, who finished much of Raphael's unfinished
works.
