European Exploration (R72)
  • Why now (late 1400s/early 1500s)?
  • European curiosity about the Far East.
  • Trade with the East due to Crusades.
  • Wealth and Ambition of new National States.
  • Scientific Progress

4
European Exploration (R68)
  • Who led?
  • Portugal (search for all-water route around
    Africa to the East)
  • Spain (wanted what Portugal had)
  • Eventually, England, France, and the Dutch
    Netherlands got involved.
  • China and Japan both distrusted Europeans Japan
    expelled foreigners, China believed exploration
    was against Confucianism.

5
European Fears
  • European seamen of the 15th and 16th centuries
had many reasons to fear a long voyage across the
Atlantic Ocean. Violent waves, frequent fogs,
and strong winds tested the courage of even the
bravest of sailing crews. Additionally, because
their ships were dependent on favorable winds to
propel them sailors feared being caught in the
doldrums, where they might drift hopelessly for
several weeks. Probably the worst fear of all
was the fear of the unknown. Sailors did not
know what hardships lay ahead of them, exactly
how to get their destinations, or how long it
might take them. As a result, a number of
superstitions developed about the ocean. Many
tales described the terrible creatures, gigantic
enough to smash any ship and devour its crew.
Others suggested that the sea to the south was
boiling, and that it might be too hot for
Europeans to live there. Despite all these
    fears, several European expeditions ventured
across the vast Atlantic starting in 1492.

  • Excavating the contents of a sunken ship is an
expensive and time-consuming process. When a
site is discovered, it is first divided into
    squares using water-resistant tubing. This
creates a grid-like map, which allows
archaeologists to carefully record the exact
location of every object they find. Once an
objects location has been noted, it is brought
to the surface for further study. Bulky objects,
like storage jars and cannons, often are raised
by using baskets attached to balloons or other
pieces of specialized equipment. Depending on
the financial resources available to the
archaeologists, an underwater excavation can last
anywhere from a few weeks to several years.

What motivated European Explorers?
  • You will investigate the contents of an
explorers sunken ship, discovered in the
Atlantic Ocean a few hundred miles off the coast
    of the Iberian peninsula.

Located on the southwestern tip of the European
continent, the Iberian Peninsula, includes the
countries of Andorra, Portugal and Spain, and the
British Crown colony of Gibraltar. At the nearest
point, it is only 5 miles (8km) from the
continent of Africa.

  • You are research teams of underwater
archaeologists who will retrieve artifacts from
the ships hull and then investigate what they
are and how they were used by explorers.
  • One DIVER from each team must enter the hull, or
base, of the wrecked ship to retrieve an
artifact. The DIVER will then bring it back to
the teams station (on land) to conduct research
    on the artifact.
  • Examine the image and draw a sketch of it.

9
  • Circulate throughout the room to locate the
written description that corresponds with the
    picture.
  • Read the description carefully. Write a summary
    sentence describing the artifact.
  • The DIVER then will bring the artifact and the
summary sentence/sketch to me to check for
    accuracy.
  • A new DIVER will take the artifact back to the
wrecked ship and grab a new one.
  • Repeat the process for all 12 artifacts.

10
Critical Thinking Questions (L71)
  • Which artifacts from the sunken ship show what
the trip on an explorers ship might have been
    like?
  • Which artifacts from the sunken ship show what an
explorer might have expected from his trip?
  • Which artifacts from the sunken ship show where
the ship originated? Where it had explored?
  • What do you think were the top five motives
(reasons) 15th and 16th century Europeans went on
    voyages of exploration?
