dominant hand to mark responses.

- The WESTEST 2 content area tests are not timed.
- All sessions of a content area test are to be
completed on the same day they are begun. - Your county will provide a testing schedule for
your school. - The test should be given at the beginning of the
school day to help maximize student performance.

- Students who typically take longer to complete
tests may be grouped together. - Students requiring additional time must be
accommodated. - Additional time must not result in an opportunity
for the student to study information on a test
already started.

- Breaks must be provided as indicated on the
suggested testing schedule. - When breaks are given, test booklets must be
closed and all test materials must be secure. - Students should be instructed not to discuss the
test during scheduled breaks and upon completion

28Make-up Sessions
- The Principal/Building Level Coordinator is
responsible for scheduling the time and place for
the make-up sessions and for assigning an
Examiner to administer the test(s). - Test security procedures must be followed before,
during, and after each testing session. - Follow all scripted directions during the make-up
sessions. - Give the students all scheduled breaks.
29Preparing Students for Testing
- Ensure all students are familiar with both the
general types of questions on the test and the
procedures to follow when recording the answers. - Remind students the day before the test to bring
appropriate activities to work on when they
complete their tests. - Have quiet activities prepared for those students
who forget to bring their own. Activities must
be unrelated to that days testing.
30Before Test Administration
- Obtain a class packet from the Principal/Building
Level Coordinator. The class packet contains - secure test booklets and answer sheets that must
be checked out and recorded on the Security
Checklist - a DO NOT DISTURB sign for the door
- at least two sharpened No. 2 pencils with good
erasers for each student - a supply of scratch paper
- a supply of graph paper
- a Testing Irregularity Sheet
31Before Test Administration
- Ensure you have a copy of the Test Examiners
Manual , as well as manipulatives and reference
sheets, as needed for each student. - Check each test booklet (Grade 3) or answer sheet
(Grades 4-11) to verify that it has a pre-coded
student label. If there is no pre-coded label and
the Bio-Grid is blank, contact the
Principal/Building Level Coordinator. - Leave the student name and teacher name lines
blank on the front cover of the test booklets.
Students must complete this information.
32Preparing the Classroom for Testing
- Clear desks and work areas of all booklets,
papers, and other materials. - Ensure that NO information pertinent to the test
being administered is displayed in the classroom
during test administration.

- Mathematics punch-out rulers are provided with
the testing materials and should be prepared
prior to the day the Mathematics test is
administered. - Students may also use personal rulers or
calculators, as long as these tools do not
display formulas, hints, or information that
could be used to answer test questions. - Mathematics Formula Sheets and Science Reference
Sheets are independent of the test booklets and
must be distributed with each content area test.
35Preparing Calculators
- Any kind of graphing calculator may be used,
except one with a typewriter-style (QWERTY)
keypad or one that includes a computer algebra
system (CAS). - All types of memoryincluding standard memory,
ROM, and flash ROMmust be cleared to factory
defaults both before and after testing. - Any programs or applications must be removed
prior to and after testing.
36Preparation of Test Booklet
- On the test booklet cover,
- ensure each student prints his/her name on the
front cover of the test booklet. - ensure each student prints the Examiners name
on the line provided each day.

44Reading Language Arts
- The Reading Language Arts section in the Answer
Document is not divided into sessions like the
other content areas. - Students should complete Session 1 and then stop
on that particular number both in the test
booklet and on the answer document. - When Session 2 begins, make sure the item number
in the test booklet matches the item number on
the answer document.

each content test. - Reading/Language Arts test may not be read aloud
or signed to any student. Only the directions
may be read aloud or signed.

50During Testing
- Set aside the test booklets and answer documents
for students who are absent. - Each day, shortly after the test administration
begins, the Principal/Building Level Coordinator
will collect - test booklets (ALL grades)
- answer sheets (Grades 4-11)
- Read the student directions verbatim.
- Directions to be read aloud are printed in boxes
and preceded by the word SAY. - Explanations providing greater detail are printed
in italics.
51During Testing
- Give students adequate time to complete the
content area test. - If a student requiring additional time stops
working for more than 10 minutes, it is
recommended that the testing session for that
student be terminated. - Each content area test must be completed on the
day it begins. - Circulate around the room to monitor student
progress on the test.
52During Testing
- Record any test administration problems on the
WESTEST 2 Testing Irregularity Sheet (see
Appendix J). - All irregularities that could lead to
invalidation of the test results must be reported
to the Principal/Building Level Coordinator as
soon as possible on the same day they occur. - Damaged test booklets (All Grades) and answer
sheets (Grades 4-11) need to be reported to the
Principal/Building Level Coordinator immediately.
53During Testing
- Do not destroy or dispose of damaged test
booklets or answer sheets. - Grade 3 - Make sure students write in their test
booklets only in approved areas. Students should
fill in each circle completely for their answer
choices. - Students who complete a test early should close
their test booklet and answer sheet. - Do not re-open until instructed to do so.
54During Testing
- Make sure test booklets are closed and answer
sheets are secure during breaks. - At the end of each day of testing
- check in all test booklets and answer sheets to
the Principal/Building Level Coordinator. - ensure the number of test booklets and answer
documents matches the number assigned to you on
the Security Checklist.
55After Testing
- Sort the test booklets in numerical order by
Security Barcode, with the spines facing in the
same direction. - Sort the answer documents in order matching the
numerical order of the test booklets. - Return the test booklets and answer documents to
the Principal/Building Level Coordinator at the
locked and secure central location immediately
after the testing session has ended.
56After Testing
- Ensure the number of test booklets and the
number of answer sheets matches the number
assigned to you on the Security Checklist when
you check them in to the Principal/Building Level
Coordinator. - Return the completed WESTEST 2 Testing
Irregularity Sheet to the Principal/Building
Level Coordinator if an irregularity has
occurred.
57After Testing
- Return the secure scratch paper and graph paper
to the Principal/Building Level Coordinator for
shredding. - Verify the Braille bubble has not been filled in
unnecessarily. - Verify that the box labeled Administrators Use
OnlyInvalid on the inside-front cover of the
test booklet (Grade 3) and front lower right
corner of answer sheet (Grades 4-11) has not been
filled in unnecessarily. Only the
Principal/Building Level Coordinator may
invalidate a content area test.
58For Questions/Issues
- Examiners contact your Principal/Building Level
Coordinator.
59Standard Conditions with Accommodations for
Students with an IEP or Section 504 Plan
- All students with an IEP or a Section 504 Plan
are to participate in all components of the
WESTEST 2 in the grade level at which they are
enrolled, except for those students who meet the
criteria for participation in the West Virginia
Alternate Performance Task Assessment (APTA).
60- It is recommended that students with an IEP or a
Section 504 Plan be assessed following the same
testing schedule as their regular education peers
in their enrolled grade. - Students with an IEP or Section 504 Plan should
be tested in the same content area on the same
day as their peers unless other scheduled
arrangements have been approved by the County
Test Coordinator.
61- The student is to receive all assessment
accommodations as outlined in the IEP or Section
504 Plan. For additional information, refer to

62Accommodation
- An accommodation is a change in the
administration of an assessment, such as setting,
scheduling, timing, presentation format, response
mode or others, including any combination of
these, that does not change what is intended to
be measured by the assessment or the meaning of
the resulting scores an accommodation does not
change the construct of the test.
63- Read aloud verbatim the directions, stimulus
material, questions and/or answer choices for the
Mathematics, Science and Social Studies tests as
per the IEP or Section 504 Plan. - On the Reading/Language Arts test, only the
directions may be read aloud. - For a blind/partially-sighted student who does
not read Contracted Braille or Nemeth Code, the
directions, stimulus material, questions and/or
answer choices may be read aloud verbatim to the
student for the Mathematics, Science and Social
Studies tests.
64- Use a text-talk converter to present directions,
stimulus material, questions and/or answer
choices verbatim for a blind/partially-sighted
student, when that is the students typical mode
of accessing written material. - Rephrase directions to state the same message in
a new or different way and not breach security of
the test items or give away an answer. (ONLY by
a trained Examiner.)
65- Use Braille or other tactile form of print when
that is the students typical mode of accessing
written material. Student responses must be
transcribed to a standard test booklet (Grade 3)
or onto an answer document (Grades 4-11). Refer
to Directions for Transcribing in the Examiners
Manual. -
66- Use an electronic translator or sign-dictionary
to present directions, stimulus material,
questions, and answer choices for the
Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science tests. - On the Reading/Language Arts test, only the
directions may be presented using an electronic
translator or sign-dictionary.
67- Use a large print edition (18 point font) of the
test when it is the students typical mode of
accessing written material. - Student responses must be transcribed to a
standard test booklet (Grade 3) or onto an answer
document (Grades 4-11). Refer to Directions for
Transcribing in the Examiners Manual.
68Response

71Scheduling
- Provide more breaks than are scheduled as long as
the breaks do not allow an opportunity for the
student to study information on a test already
started. - Schedule breaks according to students needs.
- Complete all tests on the same day that they are
started.
72Additional Accommodations
- An IEP Team or Section 504 Committee may request
from the Office of Student Assessment Services
permission to use other accommodations. A
request for a student to use an assessment
accommodation that does not appear in the West
Virginia Guidelines for Participation in State
Assessments must be received by the Office of
Student Assessment Services, Attention Sandra
Starr, Coordinator, no later than Friday, April
17, 2009. The request must come from either the
County Test Coordinator or the County Special
Education Director.
