Program Description The carpentry program is
designed to prepare students for employment in
the residential and commercial construction
industry. Students are involved in blueprint
reading, layout, fabrication, foundation, walls,
floors, ceilings, and roofs of structures.
Students will use several forms of materials such
as wood, metal, plastics, fiberglass, Styrofoam,
and concrete in the construction process. The
care and safe use of hand tools, power tools, and
equipment is emphasized during training.

- About 32 percent of all carpentersthe largest
construction tradewere self-employed. - Job opportunities should be best for those with
the most training and skills. - Between 3 and 4 years of both on-the-job training
and classroom instruction usually is needed to
become a skilled carpenter. - Carpenters are involved in many different
kinds of construction, from the building of
highways and bridges to the installation of
kitchen cabinets. Carpenters construct, erect,
install, and repair structures and fixtures made
from wood and other materials. - Employment of carpenters is expected to
increase by 10 percent during the 2006-16 decade. - In May 2006, median hourly earnings of wage
and salary carpenters were 17.57. The middle 50
percent earned between 13.55 and 23.85. The
lowest 10 percent earned less than 10.87, and
