Title: Planets

1
Planets
  • By Michele Litt

2
What are planets?
  • Objects that orbit the sun.
  • Objects that are large enough to become round due
    to its gravitational pull.
  • Planets are tidy, which means that they are able
to sweep up asteroids, comets, and other debris.
By the planets orbit being tidy, it helps clear
a path for the planets to orbit the sun.

3
The eight planets are
4
Mercury
  • Is the closest planet to the sun and it is
    smaller than Earth in size.
  • It is tiny and rocky.
  • It has no water and very little air.
  • It does not have a blanket of air around it so
Mercury gets very hot during the day.
  • Mercury has an atmosphere (layer of gas that
    surrounds the planet).
  • It gets very cold at night.
  • You are not able to live on Mercury.
  • Mercury has craters and mountains like the moon.
  • There is no moons on Mercury
  • It takes Mercury 88 days to orbit the Sun.

5
Mercury
6
Venus
  • the second planet from the sun.
  • Venus is about the same size as Earth.
  • Venus is a very bright planet.
  • Venus has thick layers of clouds around it, which
    makes Venus the hottest planet.
  • Venus has no water.
  • Venus has many volcanoes and is covered with rock
    and ash.
  • It takes about 225 days for Venus to complete its
    orbit around the Sun.

8
Earth
  • Earth is our home and it is the third planet from
    the sun.
  • Earth is the only planet that has life on it.
  • On Earth you can find liquid water and oxygen.
  • Earth has an atmosphere and that helps keep the
planet from getting too hot or too cold.
  • Earth has mountains, deserts, valleys, forests,
    and some frozen land.
  • The Moon is Earths only satellite.
  • Earth completes one revolution around the Sun
    every 365 days.

Earth
10
Mars
  • Is the fourth planet from the sun.
  • Mars is called the Red Planet because it has red
rocks and rust in the soil.
  • Mars takes about two years to orbit the Sun.
  • Mars has many volcanoes.
  • Mars also has canyons, craters, and valleys.
  • There is wind on Mars, which causes huge dust
    storms.
  • There is no liquid water in Mars, but there is
ice at the poles in Mars.
  • The scientists believe that there might have been
liquid water and life on Mars, but nothing has
been found to prove that yet.

11
Mars
12
Jupiter
  • Fifth planet from the Sun.
  • It is huge and bigger than all the other planets
    put together
  • Jupiter has rings and is made up of gases.
  • On Jupiter the gases form the Great Red Spot.
  • 1 Jupiter year is almost 12 Earth years
  • There are short days like 10 Earth hours long.

13
Jupiter
14
Saturn
  • It is the sixth farthest planet from the Sun.
  • It is the second largest planet.
  • Saturns rings are made of ice, rock, and dust
  • On Saturn, it is very cold.
  • There are at least forty six moons.
  • Takes almost thirty years for Saturn to orbit the
    Sun.
  • Rotates in about 11 Earth hours.

15
Saturn
16
Uranus
  • Is the seventh planet from the sun.
  • It has ten rings.
  • the third biggest planet
  • It is about 1/3 the size of Jupiter.
  • It takes 84 years to make one orbit
  • Uranus rotates in about 17 Earth hours.

17
Uranus
18
Neptune
  • Is the eighth farthest planet from the Sun.
  • Neptune appears to be blue due to the gas in the
    atmosphere.
  • almost the same size as Uranus.
  • One Neptune year is 164 Earth years.
  • It rotates in about 16 Earth hours.

19
What are inner planets?
  • Inner planets are the small, rocky planets that
  • orbit close to the sun.
  • What are outer planets?
  • Outer planets are the planets that orbit farthest
    from the sun.

20
Which planets are the inner planets and which are
the outer planets?
  • Outer Planets
  • Jupiter
  • Saturn
  • Uranus
  • Neptune
  • Inner Planets
  • Mercury
  • Venus
  • Earth
  • Mars
