Title: Welcome to the US!

1
Welcome to the US!
  • Lesson 1
  • Geography
  • The 50 States

2
THE 50 STATES
  • There are 50 States in the United States. How
many States can you name? Make a list.
  • Only 48 of the states connect with other states.
They are called the continental US. Do you know
    the other two states?
  • States are more powerful than prefectures in
Japan. They can make their own laws.
  • For example, driving laws are different from
state to state. You can turn right on a red
light in some states, but not in others.
  • Marriage and divorce laws are different too. You
can get married and divorced very easily in
    Nevada!

3
STATE ABBREVIATIONS
  • Each state has a two letter abbreviation. These
are used for addresses. These abbreviations are
    important to remember.
  • On your test in two weeks, you can use the names
of States or their abbreviations, whichever you
    prefer.

4
Districts and Territories
  • Washington DC is the capital of the US, but it is
not a State. It is a district.
  • Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands also
belong to the US, but they are not States either.
    They are called territories.

5
CAPITAL CITIES
  • Each state has a capital city. New York City is
the capital of New York, and Sacramento is the
capital of California. Here is a map of the
    States and their Capitals.
  • Try this quiz with your friends. There are many
other US capitals quizzes on the same home page.
    Have fun!
  • This home page has beginning, intermediate and
advanced games to play to help you study the
States, their Capitals and their abbreviations.
    Enjoy! See you next week!
