- Characteristics and Challenges of a Pandemic
- Rapid worldwide spread
- Potential decrease or shut down of essential
services - Health Care Systems overloaded
- Economic and social disruption
16When a Pandemic First Appears
-There will not be enough vaccineinitially in
first wave-NONE -There may not be enough
anti-virals -The health care system will be
stretched beyond its limits -Limited to no
assistance from state and federal governments due
to nationwide impact -Many sectors of
society will begin to be affected schools,
businesses, large public gatherings, travel, and

18Pandemic Severity Category
19What will happen when it starts?
- If the pandemic is severe or expected to be
severe, the Health Commissioner will recommend
school closure for public safety. - People will be asked to stay away from public
places.
20What will happen when it starts at our school?
- Does your school have a viable plan to continue
to educate students when schools are ordered
closed. - All staff, students, and families should be
instructed to listen for more information once a
pandemic is declared.
21Each school shouldLimit the Spread
- Plan for
- Infection Control
- Site Control
- Social Distancing
22Pandemic Influenza Planning
- Infection Control Strategies
- Hand washing
- Cover your cough
- Masks
- Environmental Sanitation
- During a pandemic period room sanitation should
be increased. - Telephone sets in common areas should be cleaned
prior to use, consider individual headsets,
keyboard covers - Anti-bacterial solutions should be applied daily
to all common areas
23Infection Control Strategies
Cough into your sleeve
24Pandemic Influenza Planning
- Site Controls
- Advise staff and students not to enter school if
they have symptoms of influenza - Teach and reinforce General Infection Control
(basic hygiene hand hygiene, and respiratory
etiquette), post notices. - Ensure that there are adequate supplies of
tissues, hand hygiene products, and
cleaning/disinfectant supplies. - In a severe pandemic, schools may consider
requiring students and staff to pass a health
screening before returning.
25Pandemic Influenza Planning
- Social Distancing Strategies
- Avoid meeting people face to face
- Use telephone, video conferencing and the
Internet to conduct business as much as possible,
even when participants are in the same building - If a face to face meeting is unavoidable
- Minimize meeting time, choose a large meeting
room and sit at least 3 feet away from one
another, avoid shaking hands - Bring lunch
- Avoid the cafeteria and crowded restaurants
- Do not congregate in lunchrooms or other areas
where people socialize - Do what needs to be done then leave the area.
- Avoid public transport
- Walk, cycle, drive a car or go early or late to
avoid rush hour crowding at the workplace.
