  • New Kinds of music, art, and literature became
    popular in the 1920s.
  • The 1920s became known as the Roaring Twenties.
  • Women played sports, went to college, and worked
    outside their homes in many types of jobs.
  • Women drove cars for the first time.

  • Some women even flew airplanes.
  • Young women called flappers cut their hair short
    and wore knee-length skirts instead of skirts
    that went down to their ankles.

Jazz and the Harlem Renaissance
  • Music was changing too. A new type of American
    music called jazz, became popular.
  • Jazz is a style of music that used a lot of
    improvisation. This means musicians decide which
    notes to play as they perform.
  • Louis Armstrong, a singer and trumpeter, helped
    to make jazz popular in the 1920s.
  • Jazz fit that decade so well that it was
    sometimes called the Jazz Age.

  • Jazz began among African Americans who lived in
    the South.
  • Harlem, a neighborhood in New York City, was
    famous for jazz.
  • In the 1920s Harlem became a center for African
    American musicians, artists, and writers, such as
    the poet Langston Hughes.
  • They painted pictures of and wrote about African
    Americans.

  • A renaissance is a time when there is new

  • The first radio broadcast in the United States
    was in 1920.

  • Soon radio stations all over the country aired
    news reports and other programs.
  • Families gathered around the radio each night to
    listen to music, comedy shows, and mystery
    stories.
  • Radio commercials advertised everything from
    toothpaste to cameras.

  • By 1925, more than two million homes owned
    radios.
  • Babe Ruth became the first baseball player to hit
    60 home runs in a season.
  • Movies became a favorite form of entertainment
    during the Roaring Twenties.
  • At first, movies were silent. Then in 1927, the
    first movie with sound, called a talkie
    appeared, and movies became even more popular.

  • The Wright Brothers made the first successful
    airplane flight in 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North
    Carolina.
  • An aviator is a person who flies an airplane.
  • In 1927, Charles Lindbergh became the first
    person to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean.
  • People listened to radio reports of his daring
    flight, and he became a hero.

  • Amelia Earhart was another aviator who set many
    flying records.
  • Earhart inspired other brave and independent
    women to follow their dreams.
