Title: The Eternal Logos Tabernacled Among Us

1
The Eternal Logos Tabernacled Among Us
  • John 11 5 9 14

Presented by Bob DeWaay December 23, 2007
2
The eternal pre-existence of the Logos
  • John 11
  • In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was
with God, and the Word was God.

3
Key theological truths about Christ
  • e_n was denotes pre-existence before
    creation
  • Pros toward denotes face to face with
  • Theos e_n o logos denotes deity (but not in a
the logos was God modalist sense)
  • So there is community and unity

4

The eternal Logos is the Creator of all things
  • John 12, 3
  • He was in the beginning with God. All things
came into being through Him, and apart from Him
nothing came into being that has come into being.

5

Life is an essential quality of the eternal Logos
  • John 14, 5
  • In Him was life, and the life was the Light of
men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the
    darkness did not comprehend it.

6

The Logos brings light as He comes into the world
where men love darkness.
  • John 19
  • There was the true Light which, coming into the
    world, enlightens every man.
  • John 319
  • This is the judgment, that the Light has come
into the world, and men loved the darkness rather
than the Light, for their deeds were evil.

7

Christ as coming into the world or sent into
the world in John
  • Come into John 19 319 614 939
    11271628 1837
  • Sent into John 317 1036 1718
  • Kosmos in these instances means the inhabited
world, the theater of history, the abode of men
    (TDNT)

8

The cosmos does not recognize its Creator
  • John 110
  • He was in the world, and the world was made
through Him, and the world did not know Him.

9

Neither His homeland nor its people received Him
  • John 111
  • He came to His own, and those who were His own
    did not receive Him.

10
Those who believed in His name (i.e. believed
what is revealed about Him as described in John)
are those who received Him for who He is.
  • John 112
  • But as many as received Him, to them He gave the
right to become children of God, even to those
    who believe in His name,

11
Natural birth, however it might be understood,
does not make children of God, only spiritual
rebirth does that.
  • John 113
  • who were born, not of blood nor of the will of
the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

12
The unique and only One, the Logos, tabernacled
among us, whose glory, grace and truth remind us
of Gods presence in OT
  • John 114
  • And the Word became flesh, and dwelt lit.
tabernacled among us, and we saw His glory,
glory as of the only begotten from the Father,
    full of grace and truth.

13
There will be a future time when God will again
tabernacle with the redeemed
  • Revelation 213
  • And I heard a loud voice from the throne,
saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is among
men, and He shall dwell lit. tabernacle among
them, and they shall be His people, and God
    Himself shall be among them,

14
Applications and Implications
  • 1) The eternal Logos will come into the world
    again in judgment
  • 2) The doctrine of the incarnation is so
important it is the means of testing spirits
  • 3) Conversion is described as turning from
    darkness to light

15
1) The eternal Logos will come into the world
again in judgment
  • Revelation 1911, 12
  • And I saw heaven opened and behold, a white
horse, and He who sat upon it is called Faithful
and True and in righteousness He judges and
wages war. And His eyes are a flame of fire, and
upon His head are many diadems and He has a name
written upon Him which no one knows except
    Himself.

16
1) The eternal Logos will come into the world
again in judgment
  • Revelation 1913, 14
  • And He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood
and His name is called The Word of God. And the
armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine
linen, white and clean, were following Him on
    white horses.

17
2) The doctrine of the incarnation is so
important it is the means of testing spirits
  • 1John 41, 2
  • Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test
the spirits to see whether they are from God,
because many false prophets have gone out into
the world. By this you know the Spirit of God
every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has
come in the flesh is from God

18
2) The doctrine of the incarnation is so
important it is the means of testing spirits
  • 1John 43
  • and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is
not from God this is the spirit of the
antichrist, of which you have heard that it is
coming, and now it is already in the world.

19
2) The doctrine of the incarnation is so
important it is the means of testing spirits
  • 1John 45, 6
  • They are from the world therefore they speak as
from the world, and the world listens to them. We
are from God he who knows God listens to us he
who is not from God does not listen to us. By
this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit
    of error.

20
3) Conversion is described as turning from
darkness to light
  • Acts 2618
  • to open their eyes so that they may turn from
darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan
to God, in order that they may receive
forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among
those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.
  • Jesus Commission to Paul
