Title: EndofLevel CRT Testing in Uintah School District

1
End-of-Level CRT Testing in Uintah School
District
  • Test Administration Orientation
  • (Elementary Secondary Schools)
  • Updated Spring 2006

2
Testing Window
  • Grades 1 through 5April 17th to May 18th
  • Grades 6 through 7April 17th to May 18th
  • Grades 8 through 12April 26th through May 18th

3
Time Required For Testing
Approximately 45-50 minutes per session.
4
Who Takes The Test?
  • Students (grades 1-11) enrolled in language arts
  • Students enrolled in math 1 through algebra 1 and
    geometry
  • Students enrolled in science 4 through biology,
    chemistry and physics

5
Who Takes The Test?
  • The language arts CRT is grade specific.
Students should take the test that corresponds to
the grade in which they are enrolledExample A
9th grade student takes the 9th grade CRT. A
junior enrolled in AP English takes the 11th
    grade CRT.

6
Who Takes The Test?
  • Math and science CRTs are grade specific for
elementary students and course specific for
    secondary students. Example Students enrolled
in pre-algebra take the pre-algebra CRT
regardless of the grade in which they are
    enrolled.

7
Who Takes The Test?
  • No student should be tested Off Level. (Off
Level taking a test designed for a grade or
course different than the one in which the
    student is actually enrolled)

8
Who Takes The Test
  • Students are not required to take the same CRT
more than once. A student who repeats a class
(pre-algebra) or takes two classes that test with
the same test (Chemistry AP Chemistry) does not
retake the test. (Only the first instance counts
    toward NCLB or U-PASS.)

9
Who Administers The Test?
  • Students should be tested by their own teachers
    where ever possible.
  • Do not administer the CRT to several classes of
    students in one large room.

10
Make-up Testing
  • Schedule the testing early enough during the
testing window to allow time for make-up testing,
    if needed.
  • Make-up testing should be accomplished to the
    extent reasonably possible.
  • The goal is to have 95 or more of all students
    tested.

11
Make-up Testing
  • Make-up testing procedures should match as
closely as possible the original testing
    procedures.

12
Test Security
  • All testing materials are secure documents and
    must be treated as such.
  • Count all tests and manuals when you receive
    them.
  • Make no copies of any test materials including
    test administration manual.
  • Store tests in a secure area when not in use.

13
Testing Ethics
  • Utah Code, Section 53A-1-608 School district
employees may not engage in specific instruction
or preparation of students which would be a
    breach of testing ethics.

14
Testing Ethics
  • Test scores should represent mastery of content.
Test preparation that increases tests scores
without increasing mastery of content is
    inappropriate.

15
Ethical Practices
  • Instruction on all core curriculum standards and
    objectives
  • Classroom assessments that represent a wide
    variety of formats
  • Instruction covering general test-taking skills
  • Use of test item pools (USOE or other)

16
Ethical Practices
  • Ensure familiarity with test type
  • Motivating students to do their best
  • Checking student answer sheets to make sure they
are complete (all questions attempted, stray
    marks erased)
  • Allowing sufficient time for students to finish

17
Unethical Practices
  • Instruction limited only to core objectives being
    tested
  • Presenting questions to students which are almost
identical to those on the CRT
  • Special instruction or practice based directly on
current or previous form of the test

18
Unethical Practices
  • Giving students answers to questions
  • Inappropriate or undocumented Accommodations
  • Instructing a student to go back and reconsider
an answer on a question they have already
    completed

19
Protect Yourself
  • Activities concerning test booklets and answer
documents should be completed with class or other
teachers present- cleaning documents to reduce
errors- teacher scoring for grading use

20
Standardization
  • Employees who administer the test shall follow
the standardization procedures in the test
administration manual and any additional specific
instructions developed by the State Board of
    Education.

21
Utah Code, Section 53A-1-608
  • The State Board of Education may revoke the
certification of an individual who violates this
    section.

22
Teacher Scoring For Classroom Grades
  • Use wisely to inform grades
  • Consider the intent of CRT construction and how
    it applies to classroom grading
  • What does proficient on CRTs mean?

23
Testing Accommodations
  • Who makes the decision?People who know the
educational needs of the student (IEP team, 504
team, LEP team for English Language Learners)

24
Testing Accommodations
  • Should ensure that assessment measures the
    students abilities rather than his/her
    disabilities
  • The same type of accommodations should also be
    routinely provided during classroom instruction
to the students being accommodated on the test

25
Testing Accommodations
  • Accommodations should not be introduced for the
    first time during an assessment
  • Accommodations should be noted in writing in the
students IEP, 504 or LEP education plan

26
Testing Accommodations
  • Do not fundamentally alter or lower the standard
    or expectation
  • Are aligned with instructional practices for
    teaching the student
  • Do not change what is being measured

27
Testing Accommodations
  • Check the USOE website http//www.usoe.k12.ut.us/e
    val/Special_Needs.asp for appropriate
    accommodations.

28
Prior To Administering The Test Teacher Duties
  • Inventory testing materials to make sure you have
the correct numberof test booklets and answer
    documents.
  • You must account for and return all these
materials after testing has been completed.

29
Prior To Administering The Test Teacher Duties
  • Read the entire Test Administration Manual prior
to testing. Instructions sometimes change from
    year to year.
  • Follow directions for administration as outlined
    in the manual.
  • Tests are not timed. Allow students a reasonable,
adequate opportunity to demonstrate what they
    know.

30
Test Specific Needs
31
Math - Elementary
  • Grades 1 2 Students will need access to 20
counters of the same type used during math
    lessons.
  • Grades 3 5 Students will need a ruler with
both standard and metric calibrations and a
    calculator.
  • Grade 5 Students will need a copy of the Grade 5
Reference Sheet (printed in the front of the test
    booklet).

32
Math - Secondary
  • Students will need rulers (grades 6 7), a
calculator (see below), and a copy of the course
specific reference sheet (printed in test
    booklet).

33
(No Transcript)
34
Science - Secondary
  • Physics and Chemistry Students should have a
copy of the course specific reference sheet.(not
    printed in test booklet)

35
Specific Instructions Regarding Answer Documents
36
  • All pre-printed answer sheets must be returned to
the district office, regardless of whether the
student completes the test or not.

37
1st and 2nd Grades
  • Students mark their answers in the test booklet.
There is not a separate answer sheet.
  • Have students write only their name in the
appropriate space on the booklet. DO NOT bubble
in the student name or information.
  • Apply the pre-printed student label after the
students have completed testing, before returning
the tests to the district office.

38
1st and 2nd Grades
  • Labels which are not straight or are outside the
label box will not scan correctly.
  • For students without a pre-printed label
complete the following information in the
    appropriate space on the booklet.
  • Name (last, first, middle initial from SIS)
  • Grade
  • Ethnicity
  • Gender
  • Date of Birth
  • Student Number (taken from SIS)
  • Test Form Number

39
Pre-printed Answer SheetsGrades 3-12
  • Answer sheets which have been pre-printed with
student names must only be used by the student
    whose name appears on it.
  • Do Not bubble in any demographic information on
    pre-printed answer sheets.
  • Return unused pre-printed answer sheets to the
district office at completion of test.

40
Pre-printed Answer SheetsGrades 3-12
  • Students must mark their answers on the answer
sheet and should not write or mark on the test
    booklet.

41
Students WithoutPre-printed Answer Sheets
  • Use blank answer sheet for any student who does
not have an answer sheet with his/her name
    pre-printed on it.
  • Code all of the following information
  • Name (last, first, middle initial from SIS)
  • Grade
  • Ethnicity
  • Gender
  • Date of Birth
  • Student Number (taken from SIS)
  • Test Form Number

42
Do not fill in the blanks between first and last
name or first name and middle initial. Do not
bubble in blank spaces.
Make sure to indicate the form of the test the
student is using.
43
Students WithoutPre-printed Answer Sheets
  • If the student number has fewer than ten digits,
use zeros to fill in the left-hand
columns.Example a student with student number
475301 would be recorded as 0000475301.

44
Enter Student Number so that the last digit of
the number is in the right most box. For SN
475301 add zeros in front of the number as
necessary.
45
If student number is 475301, this example would
incorrectly scan as 4753010000.
46
During the Test - Students
  • Use only a 2 pencil to record answers.
  • Do not make any stray marks on the answer sheet.
Such marks could result in incorrect scoring.
  • Make sure all erasures are complete and clean
dirty erasures are read as incorrect answers.

47
During the Test - Students
  • Work only on the current section of test do not
    go back to previous sections.
  • If a student finishes and still has time before
the end of the test period, he/she should go back
and check to see that no questions have been
    omitted.

48
During the Test - Teachers
  • Make sure students have properly recorded the
    Test Form number (if applicable).
  • Monitor students work to ensure they are marking
answers in the correct section of the answer
    sheet.
  • Monitor students to ensure any erasures are
    complete and clean.
  • Make sure students are working only on the
    current section of the test.

49
After the Test - Students
  • Make sure correct Test Form number has been
    recorded.
  • Check to see that all answers have been marked as
    intended.
  • Erase any stray marks from the answer sheet.
  • If the answer sheet was not pre-printed, check to
see that all demographic information has been
    entered as requested.

50
After the Test - Teachers
  • Make sure students erase all stray pencil marks
    from answer sheets.
  • Make sure students who were absent during any
part of the test have the opportunity to make up
    that section.
  • Make sure correct Test Form number has been
    recorded.

51
After the Test - Teachers
  • For unused pre-printed answer sheets only, mark
the appropriate box in the special codes area of
the answer sheet indicating the reason the
student did not take the test.

52
After the Test - Teachers
  • Discard scratch or note sheets students were
    using during the test.
  • Stack answer sheets and test booklets separately.

53
After the Test Teachers
  • Stack all answer sheets face up with the timing
    marks on the same side.
  • Return all testing materials to the school
testing coordinator as soon as testing has been
    completed.

54
Attitude
  • Every effort should be made by teachers to
communicate the importance of the testing
    experience to students.
  • Test performance will increase as students
develop the belief it is important to do well.
