Findings

• LARP has developed a multiyear, multi-lab effort
  to assess and develop Nb3Sn magnets for
  interaction regions at LHC- a long quadrupole by
  2009 is the primary RD target
• Key technology issues are being addressed
• Lab-Lab integration is going in the right
  direction and we recognize this is a work in
  progress
• An operational RD Plan was presented
• This plan is directed at the above long quad goal

Findings (contd)

• The test elements have been defined
• The connection between these test elements and
  other important constraints (coming from design
  analysis, technology limits, length scaling,
  field quality ) may be defined but we could not
  see this
• identification of the critical magnet parameters
  of the goal their present technological limits
  and how LARP is overcoming these limits
  quantitatively must be done
• An effort to improve testing lab to lab was
  presented and this is importantdefining
  quantitative test measures that are related to
  overall goals and critical parameters should also
  be completed

• LARP capitalizes on the existence of the base
  program, demonstrating the crucial importance of
  generic high field magnet RD
• the necessary skills are available in the base
  programs of the Labs
• In FY05 the base program is a large part of the
  effort
• No long accelerator-type Nb3Sn coil of any
  description has to date been fabricated and
  successfully tested

Observations

• Nb3Sn IR magnets are a significant and
  challenging effort of great importance to LHC and
  accelerator science and technology in general
• Testing involves several critical shipments-
  there are concerns about the associated
  transportation issues- handling risks and
  logistics
• It is possible in such an effort to overload key
  personnel- check this often

Recommendations

• Make certain that the magnet program has
  sufficient funding in the out years to achieve
  the 2009 goals
• Manage the Base program contribution explicitlly
• Build at least two long racetrack coils at BNL
  (winding, processing, HT and Testing)
• With the new focused direction, we recommend a
  comprehensive technical review of the magnet
  program. This review should be a integrated
  review that include the corresponding activities
  from the base program.
• An integrated RD Plan must be prepared.
• Move D1 to the base program.
