Tip 1 Get Connected, Stay
Connected
  • Go to Back To School Night (Thursday, January
    14th, 700 pm).
  • Access your students grades via AERIES.
  • Go to Blackboard via GBHS Web Site.
  • E-mail teacher with questions, comments.

Tip 2 Catch Slipping
Grades Early
  • Dont chase the bus make sure you drive the
    bus!
  • Monitor grades (Aeries) minimum of 2X per week.
  • Students should e-mail teacher for assignments
    when student is absent even one day.
  • If grades drop, dont assume the worst.

Tip 3 Set Basic House Rules
  • Eliminate distractions by
  • Collecting cell phone, IPod, etc.
  • (Return only when work is completed).
  • Placing computer in main room
  • Study in a room with no phone,TV or stereo.
  • Set aside standard time for homework.

Dont be fooled by silence by expecting to hear a
ring . students text more than talk.
Collect the phone.

Tip 4 Assist with Organization
  • Make sure student is using a calendar or planner.
  • (Parents) know due dates of projects, tests, etc.
  • Aid in organizing binder.
  • Keep important papers (future tests) in safe
    place.

Tip 5 Teach Students How to
Study
  • NOTE STUDYING IS MORE THAN JUST DOING HOMEWORK
    ASSIGNMENTS!
  • Students should do the following for effective
    study habits
  • Take notes as they read.
  • Skim materials learned.
  • Understand all charts and tables in text.
  • Summarize reading (in own words).
  • Make flashcards.
  • Go to the Tutoring Center (after school).
  • Q and A with parents assistance.

Tip 6 Manage Stress (You and
Student)
  • Check students academic schedule before making
    plans.
  • Keep student in school (no vacations during
    school). 50/day
  • Dont wait until Sunday night.
  • Show understanding and support.
  • Dont badmouth teacher in front of student.
  • Help student drive the bus, not chase the bus.
    (Check Aeries)
  • Dont expect EXTRA CREDIT!

Tip 7 Hold Student Accountable (and
Responsible)
  • Dont ask do you have any homework?
  • Ask what is your homework and look at it
    together.
  • Compare Blackboard to completed work.
  • Expect student to use a planner / calendar.
  • Have teacher sign planner for verification.
  • Have consequences for failure to comply.
  • Expect student to always know what grade (and
    percentage) is in each class.

Tip 8 Trust and Verify
  • Ask to see their work.
  • Ask them to redo or improve work if not up to
    teachers expectations.
  • Inform student that you are on their side and
    want to them to be a successful young adult.
  • . . . with verification.
