Recreation Therapy in the U.S.
  • The provision of Treatment Services and the
    provision of Recreation Services to persons with
    illnesses or disabling conditions.

Recreation Therapy
  • The primary purposes of Treatment Services, which
    are often referred to as Recreational Therapy,
    are to
  • restore, remediate or rehabilitate in order to
    improve functioning and independence and
  • reduce or eliminate the effects of illness or
    disability.

    to provide recreation resources and opportunities
    to people with disabilities in order to improve
    specific and general health and well being.

Who provides Recreation Therapy
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists
  • National Counsel on Therapeutic Recreation
    Certification (NCTRC) administers and oversees
    the CTRS credential.
  • To be awarded the Certified Therapeutic
    Recreation Specialist (CTRS) certificate, a
    candidate must meet the NCTRC eligibility
    requirements and pass a knowledge-based exam.

  • structured activities which enhance specific
    functional skills

  • lifestyle/behavioral and family education
  • supported community re-integration activities.
