Special Education in Indiana
Indiana has one of the nations highest
percentages of students with disabilities,
according to the National Center for Education
Statistics. With 15.8 percent of students
possessing Individualized Education Programs, the
proportion of students in Indiana who have
identified disabilities is nearly three
percentage points above the national average of
13 percent.  Education Week reported that the
U.S. Department of Education ranked the states
ability to serve its students with special needs
as Needs Assistance. The Indiana Department of
Education and its Office of Special
Education oversee policy pertaining to Indianas
over 1,850 special education teachers, who serve
1,989 public schools and 53 charter schools in
294 districts. Apply for Online Teacher
Certification Indiana.

Licensure Requirements
FOR UNDERGRADUATES The typical route to an
Initial License entails completing
a state-approved teacher preparation program at a
university, online or in a hybrid format. Most
teachers-to-be complete a teacher preparation
program after earning a bachelors degree, but
select Indiana institutions offer undergraduate
courses of study in education and special
education that allow students to simultaneously
earn a bachelors degree and an Indiana teaching
license.

FOR GRADUATES
Graduates can enter a state-approved
certification-only teacher preparation program in
the area in which they wish to teach, or may
complete a masters or doctorate degree in
education or special education. A graduate
student should confirm with with his or her
university that an advanced degree program
contains the coursework and field experience
required to qualify for licensure in Indiana.

Characteristics of Online Teacher Certification
  • Targeting talented individuals who have
bachelors degrees and sometimes careers in
    fields aside from education.
  • Rigorous screening procedures regarding
    acceptance, including interviews and demonstrated
mastery of subject content. Tests over material
    are required to prove competence.
  • High-performance standards while within the
program, also as for final completion of the
    program and certification.
  • Field-based programs, meaning working directly
    with students within the classroom.
  • Prospective teachers working with mentors, like
other teachers and academic support staff.

Summary
Becoming a teacher through an alternate route
often goes by many names. Some call it an
emergency or temporary route, others call it a
non-traditional route, and still, others simply
call it an alternate teaching route. All of those
names basically denote an equivalent thing -
alternative pathways for certifying individuals
to show. There still may be a got to recruit
talented, committed individuals who want to show
their talents/skills in the line of
teaching.  And there are many individuals with
degrees in subject areas aside from education, or
who have valuable work experience from other
professional careers, who have a desire to form a
difference in other childrens or adolescents
lives.
