  • Where does the food go after we eat it?
  • Are you eating a healthy diet?

Chew, Chew, Chew
  • Mouth
  • Foodstuffs are broken down mechanically by
    chewing and saliva is added as a lubricant.
  • In some species, saliva contains amylase, an
    enzyme that digests starch.
  • Esophagus
  • Link between the stomach and the mouth
  • Tubular
  • Stomach
  • enzymatic digestion of proteins initiated and
    foodstuffs reduced to liquid form.
  • Liver
  • The center of metabolic activity in the body
  • Major role in the digestive process is to provide
    bile salts to the small intestine, which are
    critical for digestion and absorption of fats.

  • Provides a mixture of digestive enzymes to the
    small intestine
  • Critical for digestion of fats, carbohydrates and
    protein.
  • Small Intestine
  • This is where the final stages of chemical
    enzymatic digestion occur

  • In all animals water is absorbed, bacterial
    fermentation takes place and feces are formed.

Get your servings
  • Grains- make half your grains whole
  • Eat 6 ounces (oz) every day
  • Veggies- Vary your veggies
  • Eat 2 ½ cups every day
  • Fruits- Focus on fruits
  • Eat 1 ½ cups every day
  • Oils- this is not a food group, but you need some
    for good health
  • Get oils from fish, nuts and liquids such as corn
    oil, soybean oil and canola oil

Milk- Get your calcium-rich foods -Drink/Eat
3 cups every day Meat Beans- Go lean with
protein -Eat 5 oz every day

  • Always consume a complete and balanced diet.
  • Follow the food guide pyramid.
  • Limit the amount of fats.
  • Get the right amount of calories you need each
    day.
  • Make smart choices.
  • Veggies should be baked or steamed not fried.
