Title: LEARN, LEAD, SUCCEED

1
LEARN, LEAD, SUCCEED
  • Idaho School Boards Association
  • Donagene Turnbow, President

2
ISBA FOCUS FOR THIS YEAR
  • LEARN
  • We want to learn what other education
stakeholders are focusing on this year in hopes
that we can come to consensus with them
  • LEAD
  • We want to lead with other education stakeholders
to regain the trust and confidence in all of us
that seems to have been lost over the years
  • SUCCEED
  • If we can learn and lead, we will succeed.

3
LEARN How do we come to consensus?
  • We must become the most informed trustees,
    superintendents, parents, legislators, and other
    education officials.
  • We should be open to the ideas and discussions of
    other entities.
  • We should not be single focused.
  • We should be realistic about what we want and
    what is actually doable.

4
Lead How do we get the general public and
constituency to see all of us as leaders in
education?
  • No one entity is responsible for education in
    Idaho we all are.
  • We should accurately represent the wishes and
    opinions of our entire organizations.

5
Lead How do we get the general public and
constituency to see all of us as leaders in
education?
  • We need to begin rebuilding the trust that seems
to have been lost, among all of us, as well as
    the constituency of this state.
  • We need to be willing to commit to the hard work
and many hours it will take to succeed. It will
take more than the time and effort we expect to
    do with our respective jobs.

6
SUCCEED Together we can accomplish more than we
can apart.
  • Success means agreeing on a long term strategic
    plan for education in Idaho.
  • Success means partnering from start to finish
    with other education entities.
  • Success is partnering with higher education to
ensure our students are prepared and to produce
    high quality teachers.

7
SUCCEED Together we can accomplish more than we
can apart.
  • Success means finding a way to excite all
    students about learning.
  • Success means looking outside the box and finding
every avenue available for student learning.
  • Success means finding a way to involve parents at
    all levels.

8
SUCCEED Together we can accomplish more than we
can apart.
  • Success means embracing all students from rich to
poor, brilliant to challenged, and all ethnic
    backgrounds.
  • Success means working with industry and
businesses in Idaho, and seeking out new
businesses, that will employ our educated
students so they can remain here and contribute
    to our society.

9
SUCCEED Together we can accomplish more than we
can apart.
  • Success means using other states best practices
that they used to create consensus among all
education entities and bring initiatives to the
    legislature that were ultimately successful.
  • Success means bringing no more than one or two
initiatives per year to the legislature for
    approval.

10
SUCCEED Together we can accomplish more than we
can apart.
  • Success means finding a way to integrate local,
state, and federal social services with our
education system so that our students and parents
have access to all the resources they need.
  • Success means reducing the need for remediation
thereby reducing the costs in higher education,
health and welfare roles, and prison numbers.
