• Managing a Caribou Population

Introduction

• Wild life managers attempt to maintain healthy
  populations of wild animals, while factors both
  avoidable and unavoidable affect the
  populations.

• Everybody shares a responsibility for wildlife
  management.
• There are some legally responsible agencies, but
  their work requires the thoughtful and informed
  co-operation of citizens.

How to play

• You will be given a herd of caribou to manage
  over 9 seasons
• The carrying capacity of the habitat is 100
  animals
• The point of the activity is to end up with a
  viable population after 9 seasons (this means as
  close to 100 as possible)

• Each student has a starting population of 100
  caribou and 1 die
• For each season there are four sections
• Conditions
• Reproductions
• Conditions
• Management

• Your teacher will randomly select a card with
  instructions on it for each section of the
  season.
• The order will be a condition card, reproduction
  card, condition card and management card. (each
  season will follow this same sequence)
• Listen carefully to the instructions because they
  along with the roll of you dice will determine
  how you population is affected.

• Keep track of your caribou populations in the
  boxes on your sheet of paper
• You will be expected to provide a graph and
  answer questions later
