CLOTHES MUSIC FASHION
2
The Marriage of Music and Fashion
  • Fashion and Music have always been intertwined,
since the hippie movement in the 60s, Madonna in
the 80s and continuing today with the Hip-Hop
    culture.
  • .

HIP HOP ROOTS
  • Hip hop originated in the Bronx in 1975 when
Jamaican immigrants began living on the Bronxs
Westside. Literally the Hip Hop and rap movement
was born out of two turn tables and a microphone.
It took 20 years for big fashion names to pick
up on hip hop fashion. Now names such as Tommy
Hilfiger, Versace and Bentley can be heard in the
lyrics of popular hip hop songs.

Hip Hop Fashion goes Mainstream
  • Beginning with white sneakers and fade
hair cuts for men in the 1980s
  • To baggy pants and bright colors in the 1990s

Today Hip Hop fashion still holds some of the
same trends that the movement started with big
earings and baggy clothing mimicing prision
styles. The Hip Hop movment is getting sexier in
the 2000s.

The New Face of Hip Hop
  • Todays hip hop has kept many of its trends from
its Bronx roots. Baggy clothes for men, cocked
hats, and large hoop earrings for women are a few
of the staples of hip hop style.

6
Whose buying?
  • African American youths are disproportionately
hip-hop consumers. Studies show that nearly 2/3
of African Americans age 15-29 are categorized as
hip hop consumers. This group makes up the
majority of the 500 billion buying power that
    the hip hop culture claims.
  • There is said to be a greater link between
hip-hop music and fashion and are more likely to
say that their taste in music can be determined
    by someones clothes.
  • Fitting in to the hip-hop lifestyle often means
    expensive cars, jewelry and clothes.

All about the Benjamins
  • Hip hop is about living the good life and having
money says one African American sophomore.
Having these things is a status symbol, you get
more respect if you drive a nice car, wear
    designer clothes and expensive jewelry.
  • A 17 year old African American interviewed said
that although he needs a car he plans on buying a
pair of Red Monkey Jeans which cost 1,000. He
like many of his peer are more concerned with
keeping up with the fashion trends and dressing
like their favorite rappers than going to
college. He stated that he doesnt mind paying
for expensive clothes to dress like his favorite
rappers, in his neighborhood this equals success.
