Title: Mission Planting Models
1Mission Planting Models
- Lou Jander
- MMF Areas D/C
- Texas District LCMS
2- As we moved to the emphasis on church planting,
Ive been doing the R.O.M. thing - Reading
- Observing
- Meeting
- "We learn more by looking for the answer to a
question and not finding it than we do from
learning the answer itself."
3Strategic Planting Overall Model
- Three kinds clone, regionally-forced,
partnership - Clone not adaptable to new contexts and takes
members from existing churches - Regionally forced Sometimes breeds resentment
in local churches - Partnership keeps ownership in the hands of the
local church by making them partners in the
process
4Planting Philosophy
- Spurgeon guided his Pastors College men to plant
churches by using means effective to that
situation. He taught flexibility and to look for
responsive fields. - He said the policy in planting churches was like
a florist Plant a lot of slips hoping that
some of them will strike. - Report of the College Work In and Around
London, Sword and Trowel, May 1878 - Our plan in London has been to do very little
where we could not do much to open many rooms,
and to start many small communities in hope that
some of them would like to become self-supporting
churches.
5Types of Planting
- Intentional
- Creating a plan to initiate a new congregation
- Unintentional
- Embracing and supporting a new congregation that
it did not choose to initiate - "You teach best what you most need to learn."
6Intentional Planting Models
- Daughtering
- when a single church initiates, creates, and
leads the creation of a new congregation - Shared parenting
- when two or more congregations work together to
parent a new congregation - Satellites
- begun by a local congregation with the eventual
goal of producing an organized, self-sustaining
congregation
7Intentional Planting Models
- Multicampus
- similar to satellite
- major difference no intention to form a new
self-supporting church - Colonization
- entails the relocation of a core team to a
distant community by a parent church - Restarting
- denomination comes alongside a struggling
congregation, closes it and then restarts
8Intentional Planting Models
- Language Group Congregations
- an existing congregation targets a specific
language group - Inside-Out Planting
- new church continues to meet in the old sanctuary
but has its budget, board of elders, and
strategic approach to ministry - House Churches
- a church that meets in a private home
- excellent way to use bivocational ministers or
lay ministers
9Intentional Planting Models
- An adaptation of other models
- The next paradigm
- "It is impossible for a man to learn what he
thinks he already knows."
10Unintentional Planting Models
- Splat
- Adoption
- Death and rebirth
- Surprise
- Surrogate Parenting
11Other Church Planting Models
- Program-based Church Planting
- is the planting of a church that will
minister to people and grow through a variety of
church programs. These programs will consist of
some combination of evangelism discipleship
youth, children, men, women ministries music
missions and social ministries.
12Other Church Planting Models
- Purpose-Driven-based Church Planting
- is the planting of a church that focuses on
five purposes of a church - outreach
- worship
- fellowship
- discipleship
- service
13Other Church Planting Models
- Seeker-Focused-based Church Planting
- is the planting of churches that
intentionally target specific seeker populations,
and position themselves to respond to the
targets needs.
14Other Church Planting Models
- Ministry-based Church Planting
- is the planting of a church that will go
into the community, impact peoples lives, and
draw them towards the gospel.
15Other Church Planting Models
- Relation-based Church Planting
- is relatively new and attempts to solve the
riddle of reaching and congregationalizing
postmoderns. Relation-based churches are nothing
more than networks of single cell churches.
These churches are fluid and spread along
relational lines through people networks.
16Other Church Planting Models
- Affinity-based Church Planting
- Â Â involves the starting of a church among a
specific people or cultural group. The culture
can be defined ethnically, by language,
socioeconomic factors, lifestyle preferences, or
other distinguishing characteristics.
17Most Plants Fit Unto
- Parachute
- Sponsoring Church or Organization / Mother Church
- Collaborative Network / Partnership
- House Church / Cell Church Network
- Satellite / Campus / Multi-site
- Restart / Re-launch
- Church Split
18Art More Than Science
- Intentionally or unintentionally, churches need
to parent new churches - How it is done is not nearly as important as that
it is done - Life isnt a science we make it up as we go
along.
19Barriers to Determining a Model
- Reluctant leadership
- Not praying about church multiplication
- Setting aside definitions of success
- Buildings
- Bodies
- Budgets
20Myths in Parenting Models
- The myth of attendance
- The myth of age
- The myth of acquisition
- The myth of adequacy
