- OBJECTIVE
- Students will be encouraged to access prior
knowledge and will be engaged in the reading and
singing of a musical written by a local artist. - ACTIVITIES
- Ask Who knows how Liberal got its name?
- Read through and listen to songs from the musical
Mighty Liberal, written by Ms. Kitch

4Lesson 2
- OBJECTIVE
- Students will be engaged in reading and singing
a musical script written by a local artist.
Students will also discuss ways of researching
the authenticity of the content of the musical. - ACTIVITIES
- Finish the reading of the musical.
- Discuss ways we can research the authenticity of
the content.
5Lesson 3
- OBJECTIVE
- Students will engage in research activities that
were suggested in the previous lesson and will
learn the difference between primary and
secondary sources of information. - ACTIVITIES
- If they had any ideas that I asked them to
research on their own I would give them time to
share what they found. - Then we will actively research using their ideas.
As a back up I plan to have local websites
available, and a recorded interview of a
long-time resident of Liberal Clara Mae Sexton. - Well discuss whether our resources were primary
or secondary and reasons why there might be more
of one than the other.
6Lesson 4
- OBJECTIVE Students will be engaged in one more
research activity and will have the opportunity
to share personal experiences - ACTIVITIES
- Well talk a walk to Blue Bonnet Park and see the
plaque that has more Liberal History information
on it. - Once we return Ill let them share any personal
information they might have about how other towns
have gotten their names, and any other historical
personal event theyd like to share.
7Assessment
- OBJECTIVE
- Students will demonstrate their knowledge
collectively and privately in terms of how
Liberal got its name and the Kansas State
Symbols. - ACTIVITIES
- 1. Ill show them what standards have been
learned then Ill quiz what they should know by
showing a question, letting them answer out loud,
then showing the answer to see if they are right. - 2. Next well use the CPS unit to take a grade,
using the same questions generated in the quiz
but put in multiple choice format. - 3. Then Ill quiz them on Kansas State Symbols
until its time to leave since this presentation
will be given in January on or near Kansas Day.

reading the musical.

Accomplished by letting students read the script
