• The Snowshoe Hare is a very smart and special
  mammal.

Physical Characteristics of the Snowshoe Hare

• Snowshoe Hares are mammals.
• In the summer, its coat is reddish/brown but in
  the winter, its pure white.
• They can be 413 to 518 mm long.
• The Snowshoe Hare is named after its large, hind
  feet.

Habitat

• It can be found all throughout Maine.
• Snowshoe Hares will travel 200 yards from home.
• Unlike rabbits, they live in wide open spaces.
• To make its home, it makes a pile of leaves on
  top of a hole.

Food Chain

• Their predators are Lynx, Red Foxes, and Coyotes.
• In the summer,they eat jewelweed, clovers, and
  all grasses.
• Snowshoe Hares eat leaves and bark in the winter.
• A mother can feed her whole family at a time!

Life Cycle

• 85 of Snowshoe Hares live about 3 years.
• Most are born deaf.
• A family of hares will travel together until the
  babies are grown up.
• The female gives birth to 4 to 8 young.
