2Agenda
- About CHA
- Strategy and activities
- Key learnings
- Developing our potential
- Challenges
- Government Outreach
3About CHA
- Founded in 1998 Close to 50 members
- Represents hydropower industry in Canada
generators, manufacturers, developers,
engineering firms, organizations - More than 95 of the hydropower capacity
- Advocacy, education
4Strategy
- Strategic planning session (Montréal, January 26,
2006) - Revised vision and mission statements
- Priorities
- Positionning
- Working groups
5Activities
- Government outreach
- Media outreach (releases, articles, op-eds,
interviews) - Stakeholder outreach
- Special projects (certification programs,
socio-economic portrait, potential)
6Key Learnings
- Assets estimated at 50 billion
- Investment in 2005 of 2.2 billion
- Electricity sales represent approximately 12
billion / year - Taxes, dividends represent close to 3 billion /
year
7Key Learnings
- Excellent long-term investment socially,
environmentally and economically - Life span of facilities
- Refurbishment to improve efficiency and capacity
at very low cost - Perfect example of sustainable development
8Key Learnings
- Study conducted in 2005-06 by external
consultants reveals a huge potential for
development across Canada - Technical potential of 163,173 MW
- All provinces and territories
9Developing Our Potential
- Energy strategies in Ontario, Québec, British
Columbia, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador
focus on hydropower - Projects are developed with respect for the
environment and in collaboration with local
communities, including Aboriginal communities
10Developing Our Potential
- Ontario 25 hydropower
- By 2025, double supply of electricity from
renewables (hydroelectric, wind, solar, biomass) - East-west electricity transmission grid to import
hydropower
11Developing Our Potential
- Ontario
- OPG has a mandate to expand enhance
hydroelectric capacity (priority) - Current projects
- Niagara Tunnel to Sir Adam Beck
- Lac Seuil (12.5 MW)
- Mattagami River (485 MW)
12Developing Our Potential
- Québec 93 hydropower
- Number one priority is hydropower (4,500 MW)
- Wind energy (4,000 MW)
- 100 MW of wind power will be added for every
1,000 MW of new hydroelectricity.
13Developing Our Potential
- Québec
- Export surpluses
- Projects under study
- Eastmain-1-A / Rupert Diversion (768 MW)
- La Romaine (1500 MW)
14Developing Our Potential
- British Columbia 90 hydropower
- Upgrade existing facilities
- Buy from IPPs
- Develop new capacity
- Site C on Peace River (900 MW)
15Potential Projects
- Manitoba 90 hydropower
- New generation from hydropower and wind energy
- Projects under study
- Conawapa (1380 MW)
- Keeyask (600 MW)
- Notigi (100 MW)
16Developing Our Potential
- Newfoundland and Labrador 90 hydropower
- Plans to develop Lower Churchill River for export
(2825 MW) - Wind power (looking at 2000MW)
- Efficiency and conservation
17Challenges
- Aboriginal Relations
- Transmission requirements
- Regulatory obstacles
18Government Outreach
- Federal Government (DFO, EC, NRCan, IC, PMO)
- Briefs
- Council of F/P/T Energy Ministers
- National Energy Consultations
- Annual Forum on Hydropower
19Government Outreach
- Forum on Hydropower 2006
- Three ministers attending (two federal and one
provincial) - Members of staff and policy advisors (DFO, EC,
NRCan, IC, PMO)
20 Using additional hydropower capacity could make
a substantial contribution to reducing greenhouse
gases and air pollution both in the United States
and here at home. However, action on regulatory
efficiency is essential to ensure the continued
development of hydropower and other renewables.
Honourable Gary Lunn Minister of Natural
Resources Gatineau, October 26, 2006
21THE CLEAN AIR ACT
- Tabled in Parliament 19 October
- Amendments to existing legislations
- Notice of Intent regulations
- Difficult political environment
- Ministerial technical consultations
- 1st phase to Spring 2007
