History

• The International Petanque Federation was founded
  in 1958 in Marseille
• The First World Championship was held in 1959
• There are about 600,000 licensed players in 52
  Countries

The Game and Objective

• Petanque is a throwing game
• The goal is to throw meatal balls as close as
  possible to a small wooden ball called a Pig
• The team is rewarded points for balls being the
  closest to the pig.

Playing Area and Equipment

• The playing area should be more than 12x3 meters.
• It is usually played on hard sand, but can be
  played on grass or any other surface.
• The balls are made of metal and weigh about 650
  to 800g, and have a circumference between 7.05
  and 8.00 cm.
• The Pig is made of wood and has a circumference
  between 25mm and 35mm.
• There is a ring on the playing field that is 35
  to 50cm in diameter which both feet must be in
  while throwing

Players

• The game can be played individually or in teams.
  In competitions there are three different styles
  of teams.
• Three Players per team with two balls per player
• Two Players per team with three balls per player
• One player per team with three balls per player

Scoring

• The team with the ball closest to the pig gets
  one point for each ball closer than any of the
  opponents balls.
• One set is usually played to 13 points

Rules of Play

• The starting team begins by making a ring on the
  playing field, which you must stand in to make
  your throws.
• The pig is then thrown at least 6 meters from the
  ring, and must be at least 1 meter away from an
  obstacle
• The player that threw the pig throws his ball
  first.
• After that the team that does not have the ball
  closest to the pig throws. When they run out of
  balls, the other team throws the rest of their
  balls.
• The team that won the turn starts the next turn
  by drawing a new ring where the pig previously
  was.
• There are no violations

• Pig- wooden object that is the object of
  projection
• Set- the total round of points played to in a
  game, usually 13
• Throwing Ring- Specialized area that both feet
  must be in to make your throw toward the pig
