2What is a Running Record?
3What is a Running Record?
- In short, it is an informal assessment measuring
the fluency and accuracy rate of your student
while reading. - A running record can be done anytime, any where.
- It is commonly done on the runHence, Running
Record.
4How do I administer a running record?
- You simply have to have a copy of the Guided
Reading Text the student has been reading and
allow the child to read at least 50 words
independently. - While they are reading, you should be noting
their reading behaviors using the Miscue Guide
found in the DRA2 kit. - To find their accuracy rate divide the number of
words by the number of words the students read
accurately. If the percentage is below 90, the
level is too hard for the student. - Three of the running records should be done with
Guided Reading Texts that students are familiar
with and one should be unfamiliar.
5When do I administer a running record?
- You should do at least one running record a day.
- This is done during your Guided Reading time.
- While the students are reviewing their familiar
texts, take a running record on a student.
6I have some concerns about the accuracy of some
of my students DRAs from last year. Running
Records allowed me to see where my students are
for myself. Also on the form that I use I added 1
leveled reader above the students DRA level. This
will show for me if they are making progress and
where I need to start them at on the next DRA. I
am also getting a good look at their fluency to
see where I need to help them at for that. For my
lower readers, running records allowed them to
read an entire book and that made them feel very
good. I look to see their eyes light up when
they finish a book, were able to read all the
words, and they did it all by themselves.

7What materials do I need to administer a running
record?
- Guided Reading Book
- Running Record Sheet
- Pen/Pencil
- DRA Miscue Guide
8How often I am expected to do a running record?
- January- one per student
- February- one per student
- March- two per student
- April- two per student
- May- two per student
- Once you have taken a running record, place it in
each childs DRA2 folder.
9When is a student ready to be moved to the next
level?
- When you notice that on three of the running
records done with familiar reading is above 90
accuracy as well as an accuracy of 90 and above
on an unfamiliar text. - Generally, it takes reading 20 texts at the
instructional level before a child is ready to
move to the next Guided Reading Level.

- I cannot wait to do the DRA in January because
I'm looking forward to seeing how much my
students have grown and know that they have
grown! They love to see themselves grow too!
The students know where they are on the chart and
where they need to go in order to attain
proficiency. -
