Love Canal History

• The love canal was one of the worst tragedy in US
  History.
• The love Canal was originally meant to be a dream
  community.
• It was named after William T. Love.
• In the 1920s, the love canal was turned into a
  chemical dump site.
• It led to the formation of the Superfund

How did the Love Canal get contaminated?

• The Love Canal was contaminated when it was
  purchased by the city of Niagara Falls, which
  decided it would become a chemical dumping site.

How did the people realize the love canal was
contaminated?

• In July, 1978 the Love Canal landfill was border
  by 97 families and an elementary school.
• Scientific analyses have identified 82 different
  chemical compounds at the landfill. The children
  started getting very sick like, Cancer, epilepsy,
  blood diseases, and much, much more from being
  around the chemicals.

What Did They Do About The Contamination?

• In order to get rid of the contamination in the
  Love Canal, and other places that may need it,
  the started the Superfund.
• This program helped the Love Canal and other
  bodies of contaminated water.

What is Superfund?

• The Superfund is a program that cleans up
  environmental problems.
• The Superfund law was created to protect
  communities from heavily contaminated toxic
  waste sites that have been abandoned.
• It was started in reaction to the Love Canal
  tragedy by Rita Lavelle.

The Superfund in Sault Ste. Marie

• The Superfund, inc site covers 75 acres along the
  St Marys River.
• Soils, Sediments, and surface water in the St
  Marys River were contaminated with heavy metals,
  including chromium, lead, cadmium, arsenic, and
  mercury.
• If pollutants bioaccumulate in fish, they may
  pose a health hazard if eaten.

What does it have to do with Lake Ontario?

• The Love Canal was a canal that connected the
  Niagara River and Lake Ontario.
• So if the Love Canal was contaminated it could
  have possibly contaminated Lake Ontario depending
  on which way the water flowed.
