Title: MOTOR SKILL DEVELOPMENT

1
MOTOR SKILL DEVELOPMENT
  • ABILITIES AND FUNDAMENTAL MOTOR SKILLS

2
SKILL IS THE LEARNED ABILITY TO BRING ABOUT
PREDETERMINED RESULTS WITH MAXIMUM CERTAINTY,
OFTEN WITH THE MINIMUM AMOUNT OF TIME OR ENERGY
OR BOTH B.KNAPP
3
ABILITIES
  • ARE INNATE OR GENETICALLY DETERMINED - we are
born with abilities determined by the genes we
    inherit from our parents.
  • ARE STABLE AND ENDURING abilities remain
throughout our lives but can be developed through
    our experiences and maturation.
  • SUPPORT SKILLS each skill needs to have several
supporting or underpinning abilities in order to
learn skills effectively. They are thought to be
the foundation blocks on which skills are built.

4
TASK FOR EACH OF THE ABILITIES LISTE BELOW TRY
TO FIND A SKILL THAT WOULD REQUIRE IT
  • ABILITIES
  • Dynamic strength
  • Static strength
  • Explosive strength
  • Stamina
  • Dynamic flexibility
  • Reaction time
  • Gross body equilibrium
  • Static balance
  • dynamic balance
  • hand-eye coordinaton
  • aiming
  • SKILLS

5
Developing abilities
  • It is thought that abilities are developed during
    early childhood.
  • It is therefore important to give children a wide
range of experiences and the opportunity to
    practise.
  • Expert teaching, coaching, facilities and
    equipment will facilitate the process
  • Children who have supportive parents and suitable
role models tend to develop their abilities.

6
DEVELOPING SKILLS
  • ABILITIES ARE THE BUILDING BLOCKS ON WHICH WE
    DEVELOP SKILLS
  • CHILDREN THEN LEARN BASIC MOVEMENT SKILLS eg.
    walking, running, jumping, stretching
  • AGE 4-9 YEARS CHILDREN LEARN FUNDAMENTAL MOTOR
    SKILLS eg. Catching, kicking, throwing,
    striking, running and jumping.
  • WHEN CORRECTLY LEARNED FMS CAN BE DEVELOPED INTO
SPORT SPECIFIC SKILLS BY ADAPTING THEM TO MEET
THE REQUIREMENTS OF PARTICULAR SPORTS.eg. The FMS
of catching is developed so that it can be used
in netball, basketball, rounders, cricket and
    rugby.

7
TASK How many sport specific skills can you name
that are developed from the FMS of an overarm
throw?
