3MOLDS (FUNGI)
- General
- o Part of the natural environment
- o Present both outdoors indoor
- o Moisture and humidity play major role in mold
- overgrowth in buildings
- o No governmental regulations concerning
permissible - levels of mold and mold spores in indoor air.
4FORT MEADE MOLD ISSUES
- o Mold problems in the 1950s barracks.
- o Due to excessive moisture trapped in the
buildings.
5MOLD REMEDIATION(Barracks Bldgs)
- o Short Term Action Plan (accomplished
ongoing) - oo Cleaned visible mold growth
- oo Removed/ Replaced damaged ceiling tiles
- oo Removed/replaced old sections of pipe
insulation - oo Repaired fan coil units as needed
- oo Replace filter in fan coil units in the room
quarterly - oo Installed commercial dehumidifier in the
basement - oo Ongoing monitoring of problem areas and
assessing - potential problem areas

- o Long Term Action Plan (pending funding)
- oo Remove/ replace old pipe insulation
and ceiling tiles - through out the bldgs.
- oo Investigate water leakage in the wall from
latrine/shower - oo Renovate vacated barracks and re-locate
6MOLD PREVENTION
- o Impossible to eliminate all molds and mold
spores in the indoor environment. - o Possible to prevent sustained mold growth in
the building. - o Control indoor mold growth by controlling
moisture dampness. - o A shared responsibility of building occupants
and bldg. Management personnel - o Occupants can have a great influence on mold
prevention (see DPW mold pamphlet)
