  • The Guatemalan Genocide was committed when the
    Guatemalan Army destructed over 440 villages.

  • The military went across the Mayan region
    attacking about 626 villages.
  • Each village was attacked while already together
    for a celebration or market day.
  • Villagers were than brutally murdered.
  • Buildings were than vandalized or demolished.

  • The killers destroyed crops, slaughtered
    livestock, fouled water supply, and violated
    sacred places and cultural symbols.

Why was the genocide committed?
  • This systematic campaign of repression and
    suppression against the Mayan Indians began when
    the government claimed they were working towards
    a communist coup.

  • Most of the victims of this genocide were Mayan
    Indians. Over 200,000 people were either killed
    or disappeared.
