Title: Residential Electrical Wiring Methods

1
Residential Electrical Wiring Methods
  • Construction Electrical
  • Preston High School
  • TCJ 3CW
  • Feb-07

2
Parts of a Circuit
  • Source provides electrical energy to the circuit
  • Load device that utilizes electrical energy
  • Control device used to control the flow of
electrical energy from the source to the load
  • Conductors wires or other materials used as a
    path for electrical energy

3
Residential Wiring Types of Conductors
  • Neutral Always runs between the load and the
    source
  • Live Always runs between the Source and the
    control device
  • Control Always runs between the control device
    and the load
  • Travelers Always run between two control devices
    in pairs

4
Types of Electrical DrawingsOne Line
  • One line Drawing shows the type of device and its
order in the circuit relative to other devices
    and the arrangement in building.
  • Are used by electricians to determine cable, box,
    and conduit layouts and sizing
  • Do not show how the circuit functions
    electrically

5
One line drawing
6
Types of Electrical Drawings Schematic / Ladder
  • Show the electrical operation of the circuit
  • Show the types of devices and the electrical
    connections between them
  • Do not show physical layout of materials
  • Can be in many formats, we will use a ladder
    format

7
Schematic / Ladder
8
Types of Electrical DrawingsPictorial Drawings
  • Show devices and connections in a pictorial form
  • Include the most information and are easy to
understand, but take time to draw.

9
Pictorial Drawings
10
Guide lines for Electrical drawings
  • All drawings must have a title
  • All drawings must have a legend
  • All drawings must use colour
  • All lines must be made with a straight edge
  • All circles must be made with a template or
    compass

11
Drawing a ladder diagram
  • Make a legend and title for you drawing
  • include colours for neutral, live, control, and
    travelers
  • Draw a vertical line down the left side of the
    page in the live colour.
  • Draw a vertical line down the right side of the
    page in the neutral colour.

12
Drawing a ladder diagram 2
  • Draw a symbol for each load in the circuit down
the right side of the page in a column just to
the left of the neutral line
  • Connect each load the neutral with a neutral
    coloured line.

13
Drawing a ladder diagram 3
  • For each load not controlled by a switch connect
it to the live with a live coloured line.
  • For each load controlled by a switch draw a
switch on the left side of the page opposite the
load connect the switch to the live with a live
    coloured line.

14
Drawing a ladder diagram 4
  • Connect each switch to the load that it controls
    with a control coloured line.

15
Drawing a ladder diagram 5
  • Travelers are used when one load is controlled by
    2 or more switches.
  • The wires that run between the switches are the
    travelers.

16
Drawing Pictorial Diagrams
  • Pictorial diagrams are drawn in the same manner
that you would connect the circuit.
  • Draw the boxes arranged in a similar way to what
they will be in the real circuit.

17
Drawing Pictorial Diagrams 2
  • Draw connecting cables between the boxes in the
same way you would connect the actual circuit.

18
Drawing Pictorial Diagrams 3
  • Draw in the devices as they would appear when you
    wire them.
  • Following the order neutral, live, control,
travelers draw in wires between the devices and
the cables entering each box as they appear in
    you ladder diagram.
