Title: Da Vinci Code Myths

1
Da Vinci Code Myths
  • Jerry Sanderson

Lesson 6
2
Lets look at the Big Picture
  • The Da Vinci Code plays to
  • Modern Gnostics
  • Spiritual Feminists
  • New Age
  • Postmodernists
  • They question the historic Jesus
  • They question the role of Mary Magdalene

3
Why the focus on Mary Magdalene?
  • The modern Gnostics have turned what was an
ancient debate about the revelation of God, a
    theological discussion, into a gender
    discrimination issue.
  • In reality The New Testament elevated women.
  • Jesus appearing to Mary M. before the disciples
  • Woman at the well
  • Mary and Martha
  • Mary, the Earthly mother of Jesus

4
Liberation strikes again
  • A central theme in the book, though not in the
movie, is that pagan sexual rites were a divine
    experience. (The Hieros Gamos rite).
  • We learn from the book that through this rite men
open their minds to receive knowledge of the
    divine.
  • How does this pagan ritual treat the female?

5
What has liberation wrought?
  • More women are in poverty today from being used
sexually and having children while single.
  • Single women and their children struggle in every
way. This is a result of being liberated.

6
What was the original liberation?
  • Gen 31-5
  • Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the
wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to
the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat
from any tree in the garden'?"
  • The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit
from the trees in the garden,
  • but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from
the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and
you must not touch it, or you will die.'"
  • You will not surely die," the serpent said to
    the woman.
  • For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes
will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing
good and evil. YOU WILL BE LIBERATED

7
How did it work out? Gen 36-17
  • When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was
good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also
desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and
ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who
was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of
both of them were opened, and they realized they
were naked so they sewed fig leaves together and
made coverings for themselves. Then the man and
his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he
was walking in the garden in the cool of the day,
and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of
the garden. But the LORD God called to the man,
"Where are you?" He answered, "I heard you in
the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked
so I hid. And he said, "Who told you that you
were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I
commanded you not to eat from? The man said,
"The woman you put here with me-- she gave me
some fruit from the tree, and I ate it."

8
How did it work out?
  • Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is
this you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent
deceived me, and I ate. So the LORD God said to
the serpent, "Because you have done this, "Cursed
are you above all the livestock and all the wild
animals! You will crawl on your belly and you
will eat dust all the days of your life. And I
will put enmity between you and the woman, and
between your offspring and hers he will crush
your head, and you will strike his heel. To the
woman he said, "I will greatly increase your
pains in childbearing with pain you will give
birth to children. Your desire will be for your
husband, and he will rule over you."
  • To Adam he said, "Because you listened to your
wife and ate from the tree about which I
commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,' "Cursed
is the ground because of you through painful
toil you will eat of it all the days of your
    life.

9
Questions to ask
  • Where does the evidence lead?
  • What if Jesus wasnt divine?
  • What if the claims of The Da Vinci Code are true?
    What is the logical conclusion?
  • What if Jesus is who he claimed to be?
  • What if the Bible we have is true? What is the
    logical conclusion?

10
From the Psalms
  • Ps 374
  • Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you
    the desires of your heart.
  • If we dont delight in God, Satan will tempt us
    with worldly delights Pastor Ritch

11
The choice is clear REAL liberation or false
liberation that enslaves us
  • Rom 820-21
  • For the creation was subjected to frustration,
not by its own choice, but by the will of the one
who subjected it, in hope that the creation
itself will be liberated from its bondage to
decay and brought into the glorious freedom of
    the children of God.

12
  • 2 Cor 317
  • Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit
of the Lord is, there is freedom.

13
  • James 125
  • But the man who looks intently into the perfect
law that gives freedom, and continues to do this,
not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--
he will be blessed in what he does.

14
  • 1 Pet 216
  • Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as
a cover-up for evil live as servants of God.

15
Jesus gives us REAL freedom
  • Luke 418
  • Jesus Said "The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me to preach good news to
the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for
the prisoners and recovery of sight for the
    blind, to release the oppressed,

16
Who is Jesus ?
  • This is the most important question you can ask
    and answer.
  • Is He who Dan Brown says, a teacher, a radical in
    his day?
  • Or is He, God the Son, Redeemer and Lord?
