Title: Earth

Earth Moon
2
Earth
  • Facts about Earth
  • Earth is the 3rd planet from the Sun
  • Earth is the only planet in the solar system
    where there is life.
  • Earth is the only planet that has one moon

3
Physical Characteristics
  • Lets learn some more about the characteristics
    of Earth

4
What did you learn?
  • What are the outer planets?
  • Do you know why they are called the outer
    planets?
  • What are the inner planets?
  • What do you think the planets are like that are
closer to the sun and further away from the sun?
  • Why do you think Earth isnt too hot or too cold?

5
Land, Air Water
  • As you watch the movie think about
  • Why is water important and what do we use it for?
  • Why is air important to us?
  • What role does land have in your life?
  • Get ready to answer some questions!
  • Watch the Movie

6
Lets Review
  • Did you pay attention?
  • Water
  • What is the Earths nickname? Why is it called
    this?
  • What are some resources Earths water provides?
  • What are the 2 types of water on Earth?
  • Air
  • What is the blanket of air that surrounds the
    earth called?
  • Land
  • Why is land important to us?
  • What do we use it for?

7
  • Movement of the Sun, Moon, and Stars

8
  • Have you ever wondered how they told time way
    back when before clocks?
  • Did they just guess what time it was?
  • Brainstorm ideas together of how you think people
    told time?

9
  • Look at this diagram. It is trying to teach you
about the sun. Explain in your own words how the
sun is moving in the sky.
  • Now click on the picture to see if your
    explanations are correct.

10
  • So, back to the clock question. Knowing now that
the sun rises in the east in the morning and sets
in the west at night, how do you think people
    told time before clocks?
  • Right, they watched the sun. They used objects
like this sundial to keep track of the suns
    movement through the sky.

How do you think this object below tells people
what time it is simply by using the sun? Click
on the sundial for more information.
11
But what happened at night???
  • How did people tell time at night when there was
no sun? Brainstorm ways you think they were able
    to do this.
  • If we use the sun during the day, then we can use
the moon and stars at night. Did anyone guess
    correctly?

12
  • Just as the sun moves through the sky as the
Earth rotates, so does the moon and the stars.
    Look at this star clock.
  • Do you notice that the very center
  • of the star clock is where the
  • North Star is. Click here to find out why.
  • In order to tell the time, people depended on the
    constellations.
  • Click on the star clock to find out more
    information.

13
  • Since early times, people have been able to tell
time just by looking up to the sky. As the Earth
rotates, the sun, moon, and stars seem to pass
    through our sky.
  • In your own words, explain how people told time
during the day, and how they told time at night.
You may go back to any point in the PowerPoint
    to help you.

Earths Rotation Revolution
15
Have You Ever Wondered Why We Have Days and Years?
  • Days and years are determined by Earths rotation
around its axis and revolution around the sun.
  • Each day Earth takes roughly 24 hours to rotate
    around its axis once.
  • To make one full year, Earth takes 365.26 days to
    orbit the sun once.

16
Watch and Learn
17
Earths Rotation
  • Earth rotates once every
  • 24 hours.
  • This time is what we call one
  • day.
  • Earths rotation is what gives
  • us day and night.
  • How long does it take for Earth
  • to rotate once?

18
Earths Revolution
  • Earth revolves around the
  • sun in an elliptical orbit.
  • As the Earth revolves around
  • the sun, the place where
  • light shines the brightest
  • changes.

19
Earths Revolution
  • This motion gives us
  • the different seasons.
  • Can you name the
  • four seasons?
  • What months belong to
  • each season?

20
Review
  • How many hours does it take the Earth to rotate?
  • Roughly how many days are in one year?
  • Why do we have the seasons?
  • During nighttime, is the Earth facing the sun or
    the moon?
