9Extending your I 20
You must extend your I-20 before it expires. To
get a Program Extension I-20, you must - submit
new financial documents. - register and pay
tuition for the next term. It is your
responsibility to request an extension of your
I-20 at least 1 month before the expiration date.
10Transferring to another school
- Apply to as many schools as you want!
- Obtain the transfer form from the ONE school that
you want to transfer to. - Turn in only 1 transfer form to the SAL office.
- The office will electronically release your
records to your new school and fax the transfer
form. - Remember You MUST get a new I-20 from the new
school within 60 days.
11Transferring to SJSU
It is important to note that SAL and SJSU are two
different and separate institutions. If you
decide to transfer to SJSU after completing the
SAL program, you will need to fill out an SJSU
Transfer Form. Once your SAL term ends, we will
release your SEVIS record to SJSU. Remember all
transfer students MUST obtain their transfer I-20
within 60 days!
12Travelling outside the U.S.
- In order to travel outside the US, your school
must authorize your travel by endorsing your
I-20. Come to the SAL office at least 10 days
before your trip and get a signature on the 3rd
page of your I-20. - Take your passport, I-94 and signed I-20 with you
on your trip. - Also, take a copy of your next semesters
registration and student ID card.

Make sure to check the visa requirements between
your home country and the country you plan to
travel to!
13SEVIS Registration
- Check Current Session End Date this is the date
that we have provided to SEVIS as the last date
that you are enrolled in our program. If you
decide not to return to SAL, this is the date
that your 60 day grace period begins. This means
that you have 60 days (2 months) from this date
to either leave the country or obtain a transfer
I-20 from a new school. - If you decide to re-enroll at SAL, you must take
the next available term. This term is indicated
as Next Session Start Date.
14Updating your information
- Check your U.S. address
- SAL must provide the current address of every
F-1 visa student to SEVIS. - If you move, you need to report the change of
address to our office within 10 days, using our
information update sheet.
15Out of Status
16You will be considered out of status if
- your passport expires.
- you let your I-20 expire.
- you overstay past your 60 day grace period.
- you are transferring and do not obtain a new I-20
from the new school within 60 days. - your attendance and academic performance do not
meet SALs requirements. If this happens, you
will be put on probation. If you are put on
probation 2 times, you cannot re-register at SAL.
17In Status
18Maintaining F-1 visa status at SAL
- As an F-1 visa student, your main purpose for
being in America is to study. In order to
maintain your F-1 visa status at SAL, you are
required to
- Take 20 hours of SAL classes per week or a
combination of SAL classes and Open University
classes. (See an advisor for more information on
Open University classes). - Attend your classes regularly.
- Get good grades.
19Working in the U.S.
- It is against the law for F-1 visa students to
work off campus. - F-1 visa students are allowed to work ONLY on
campus. - During semesters 20 hours / week
- During vacation 40 hours/ week

20Health Insurance
- All international students must have health
insurance as a condition of registration and
continued enrollment in the California State
University.

21Completion of SAL program
- Once your last term at SAL ends, you have 60 days
to either - ? leave the country or
