Choreographer/Dance Instructor
  • They develop routines and movements to teach to
    other dancers. The development of a routine is a
    highly creative process.
  • Instructors must be careful to balance the needs
    of production with the physical limitations of
    the dancers.
  • They may work with dancers of all levels and
    ages.
  • They usually begin their careers as dancers, and
    then move into choreography or teaching as they
    get older.
  • Dancers must be able to express emotions or
    stories with movements, formations, and patterns.

Working Conditions
  • Dance Instructors often work long, irregular
    hours.
  • Dance Instructors at private dance schools often
    work evenings and weekends as well.
  • Depending on their job, some travel might be
    necessary for choreographers.
  • The number of hours they work, depends on the
    number of classes they teach
  • When instructors arent instructing, they spend a
    lot of time with members of production crews and
    directors.

Earnings
  • Earnings for choreographers depend on experience.
  • Some employers pay higher than others.
  • Most choreographers earn 15,000 and 70,000 a
    year, with median earnings of about 35,000 a
    year
  • Earnings for dance instructors are also varied.
  • Hourly wages for instructors are between 10 and
    30 an hour.
  • Full-time instructors can even make 70,000 an
    hour

Education
  • To become an instructor in most dance companies,
    you need to have a degree. This is most important
    in high schools.
  • For those who are interested in teaching dance,
    it would be helpful to complete an education
    program for instructing.
  • Some dance organizations and private schools
    offer training programs for dance teachers.
  • College Instructors require a PhD.
  • Both choreographers and instructors need strong
    communication skills.
