Youth Attitudes and Intentions
  • ITA surveyed 2200 grade 8-12 students in March
    07
  • 49 have or are interested in participating in a
    high school trades program up from 44 in 06
  • 22 of grade 10-12s plan to take a trades program
    after high school vs. 39 who plan to attend
    university
  • This is a shift from 2006 when results showed 20
    planning on trades vs. 42 planning to attend
    university

    apprenticeship for high school students
  • Direct entry into apprenticeship with a sponsor

ITA Youth Programs
  • Interactive, hands-on activity for youth in
    grades 6 to 9 showcasing skills used in trade
    careers in several industry sectors
  • Partnerships between industry and/or community
    tradespersons and the schools
  • Parental involvement
  • Pre-activity and post-activity classroom learning
    on the skills and opportunities around a career
    in the trades
  • Evaluation component - organizers and
    participants rate how well the activity met
    objectives
  • ITA provides grants and resource materials to
    successful applicants

  • Earn 16 credits towards graduation through their
    work based training component
  • Get a head start on work-based training portion
    of an apprenticeship

  • 470 1,000 scholarships in 06/07
  • - up 20 from last year
  • Growing number coming in for level 1 training
    before graduation

SSA Scholarship Awards Totaled 470,000 Last

  • SSA scholarship criteria
  • Registered in SSA prior to graduation
  • C average in Grade 12 numbered courses
  • Must have graduated from secondary school
  • 5 months in trade after graduation (or 1100 hrs
    recorded with the ITA)
  • Completed required 480 hours of SSA work
    experience (registered with ITA at least 1 month
    prior to graduation and complete 480 hours within
    3 months of graduation)

  • Complements SSA students can enroll in both
  • 43 districts and 4 Board Authorities are offering
    ACE IT programs this year
  • 1050 students registered for fall 07 ACE IT
    intake
  • ACE IT (Accelerated Credit Enrolment in
    Industry Training)
  • Gives secondary school students head start on
    technical training towards an apprenticeship
    usually Level 1

ACE IT Key Elements
  • Post-secondary partnership Districts must look
    to post- secondary partners to assist with the
    development and delivery of technical training
  • Industry partnership ACE IT is a market driven
    program. Industry partners provide the feedback
    on the need for particular training in the local
    community.
  • Funding to school districts
  • 2,000 per student for level 1 technical training
  • 750 per student for a work placements (one-time
    payment) up to 240 hours signed off by a
    qualified journey person

    students with the ITA via an on-line registration
    system

  • 51 districts participating in SSA and or ACE IT
  • 35 different trades in ACE IT
  • 470 SSA scholarships awarded in 06/07
