Allisons Excel Lesson (Part 4)

Open the starter file
  • If you are at home, please download the
    Fund.xlsx data file from my website.
  • If you are at school, read on!
  • Open the Start menu
  • Go to Programs, choose To Students
  • Open CGS 2100 Data Files
  • Open 90577-6_Excel
  • Open Tutorial.04
  • Open Tutorial
  • Finally, open Fund.xlsx

Select the data source for the assets chart
  • Check the Assets sheet tab to make the Assets
    worksheet active.
  • Select the range A3B8.

Insert a pie chart
  • Insert tab Charts group Pie button
  • Choose the first pie chart in the 2-D section.
  • It should show up in the Assets sheet.

Move the chart to the Summary Report worksheet
  • Click on the chart somewhere in the whitespace.
  • Chart Tools Design tab Move Chart button (its
    on the far right)
  • A dialog box shows up.
  • Select the Object in radio button
  • From the dropdown menu, choose Summary Report
  • Click OK. The chart will move to the Summary
    Report worksheet.

Move the chart
  • You should now be in the Summary Report
    worksheet. Move the pointer to an empty area of
    the selected chart (the whitespace).
  • Click and drag the chart so its upper-left corner
    is in cell A13.

Resize the chart
  • Now move the pointer to the lower-right corner of
    the chart so that your pointer changes to a
    diagonal arrow.
  • Click and drag the corner to resize the chart.
    Adjust it so that the bottom-right corner is in
    cell E21.

Apply a different chart style
  • Click the whitespace of the chart again.
  • Chart Tools Design tab Chart styles group
  • Use the up and down arrows to look at the
    different chart styles. Pick one you like!
  • Heres my choice

Change layout
  • Click the chart in the whitespace again to make
    sure its selected.
  • Chart Tools Design tab Chart Layouts group
  • Use the up and down arrows to view the different
    chart layouts. Choose one you like that has a
    legend.
  • Heres mine

Format chart title
  • Click the chart title (Assets)
  • Type Allocation of Assets and press ENTER
  • Go to the Home tab and change the font size to
    12. You may add other formatting if you like.
  • Heres mine (I added some color)

Format chart legend
  • Click the chart legend.
  • Chart Tools Layout tab Labels group Legend
    button Show legend at left
  • If you like, you can do additional format
    adjustments by going to Chart Tools Layout tab
    Labels group Legend button More Legend
    Options
  • Heres mine (I added an orange fill)

Format pie charts data labels
  • Click on the pie chart itself.
  • Chart Tools Layout tab Labels group Data
    Labels button Outside End
  • Unless your pie chart is already formatted this
    way, this will place the data labels outside

    working with charts, and the various methods of
    formatting.
