3Writes Upon Request
- Â
- 1.  What is Writes Upon Request? Writes Upon
Request is a Leon County writing assessment that
is administered to all students in grades 1
through 5. This writing assessment program
requires a student to produce a piece of writing
in response to an assigned topic called a
prompt. The writing is then scored according
to specific, predetermined criteria. - Â
- 2.   When and how is it administered?   First
Graders take two WUR assessments, one in February
and one in April. In February they will be given
an expository prompt and in April they will be
given a narrative prompt. After being read the
prompt, the students will have 10 minutes to plan
their writing and 20 minutes to write. - 3.  What are we doing in school to prepare the
students?  During the first nine weeks, we will
spend time modeling the planning and writing
process together as a class. Then during the
second nine weeks, the students will be given
many opportunities to practice planning and
writing about a given topic. We will also
practice scoring papers, so that the students
know what makes up a good piece of writing. - 4.  What can you do at home to prepare your
child? At this time, the best thing you can do
to help your child at home is to provide plenty
of opportunities to write. We will be sending
home a Writes Upon Request Writing Packet in
December which will offer more detailed and
specific information about what you can do.
