Online Public Access Catalog
  • The OPAC provides different searches or modes of
    accessing books.These searches includes the
    option of typing in the authors last name (if
    known), the title of the book (if known), a
    keyword, or a subject search.
  • For Example, Pirates of the Caribbean Seas by
    David Thomas may be looked up by the following
    methods
  • Choosing author and typing in Thomas, David or
    just Thomas
  • Choosing title and typing out the title Pirates
    of the Caribbean Seas
  • Type in the subject pirates
  • Type in the keyword pirates which in this case
    happens to be the same as the subject

Glossary of Library Terms to Know
  • Bar Code the series of black lines on a white
    label which identify the unique number of all
    materials (like UPC symbol)
  • Call Number the Dewey decimal number/letter
    combination on the spine of the book (spine
    label)
  • Circulation the process of checking materials in
    or out of the library ours is by a company
    called Follett
  • Dewey Decimal System the way the library
    materials are organized into ten basic categories

  • Fiction novels and short stories arranged in
    order by the first three letters of the authors
    last name
  • Non-Fiction books of factual information
    arranged in the Dewey Decimal System
  • Patron any user of the library, such as a
    student or teacher
  • Reference the section where encyclopedias,
    dictionaries, almanacs and other quick-answer
    resources are located reference materials may
    not be checked out

Computer Use in the Library
  • The internet is for school related use only.
    Doing personal work such as email, chat rooms,
    maintaining your own web site, games, music, etc.
    is not appropriate at school because of the
    limited number of computers available for library
    research.
  • Typing and printing papers is allowed. You can
    use a floppy disc to save documents or save to
    your folder on the student server. Floppy discs
    are on sale for 1.00 at the front counter.
    Printing costs 0.10 per page. Pick p your
    printing at the front library counter.
  • When you are done, log off. Go to the start
    button and select log off. Then bring the
    computer card back to the front counter.
  • If you are in the library with your teacher using
    the computer for a class project, the teacher
    will supervise you. You do not need to check
    out a computer from the librarian.
  • Library staff will accept up to 3 students to use
    computers during a school day without teacher
    supervision.
  • Middle school and High school faculty members are
    requested to schedule their classes to come to
    the library to use the computers to complete
    assignments throughout the year.

How To Log On To Computers
  • To log into computers,you need a student login
    name and a student ID. For most students,the
    student login name is your First Initial followed
    by the First FIVE letters of your last name
    followed by a 1.
  • For some students,the number at the end may be a
    2,3,4,etc.
  • For example
  • John Smith would probably be jsmith1.But might be
    jsmith2,jsmith3 etc.
  • Elizabeth Spenger would probably be espeng1.
  • Note there are no spaces in the login name . Your
    password is your student Id number.
  • When you log in you have access to a student
    folder that has the same name as your login
    name.Saving to this folder allows you to retrieve
    this information from anywhere on campus.The
    space is limited so you may need to delete unused
    documents from time to time (you can copy them to
    a disk if you like ). All files will be deleted
    at the end of the school year.

Saving To A Student Folder
  • When you log in, you have access to a student

Care and Maintenance of Textbooks
  • Textbooks should be covered at all times. It
    protects the cover and extends the life of the
    book. Excessive damages to book will result in
    a fine.
  • Do not tape your book covers to the books. This
    damages the book and will result in a fine.
  • Please write your name in the designated area
    only. Do not deface, write in or on the books.
  • Write the title barcode numbers of your books
    in a binder or another area for your reference in
    case of misplaced books.
  • Be careful placing food and/or drinks in your
    backpack with your books.
  • If you drop or change a class, or are no longer
    using the book, return it to the library to clear
    your record. Do not give it to your teacher or
    leave it in the classroom. You are still
    responsible for the book.
  • You are responsible for all books being checked
    out to you. Please do not leave books in
    classrooms or lying around or loan them to your
    friends.
  • When returning books, please take out papers and
    take off your book cover.
