• Collectively horses with patches are referred to
  as pintos or paints
• The white patches are the result of underlying
  pink skin, which leaves the hair devoid of
  pigment
• Includes the
• Tobiano
• Overo
• Frame
• Sabino
• Splashed White
• Rabicano

Gene TO Tobiano Spotting Pattern

• Several different white spotting patterns exist
  in horses.
• So far, only that of tobiano has been clearly
  shown to be conditioned by a single gene.
• Tobiano spotting, symbolized by TO, is a variable
  restricted pattern of white hair with underlying
  pink skin which can occur with any coat color.
• The pattern is present at birth and stable
  throughout life.

• In general, white extends from the neck crest,
  the withers, or top of the croup in an apparent
  top-to-bottom distribution on the body.
• The white areas may merge to form an extensive
  white pattern of generally smooth outline.
• The legs are white
• The head is usually dark except for a facial
  marking pattern.

• White legs, solid head
• If head markings exist, they are due to Sabino,
  Frame, Splash
• Blue eyes (1 or 2) are not a characteristic
• If 1 or 2 are blue, test for Frame w/ OLWS test
• Tobiano hides Frame (Fr) very well
• Small star 1 blue eye might be all you see
• Snip or strip might be all you see of the Sabino
  or Splash gene

• Features
• Body white crosses the spine and appears to
  descend vertically
• Four white legs (irregular edges)
• Ermine spots with dark hooves
• Patches of color around chestnuts

• White usually crosses topline somewhere between
  ears and tail
• Spots are rounded with clean, sharp edges
• Tail can be two-color, but if so, white will be
  at top and color at bottom

  white
• If Moroccan pattern, then usually will have
  other pattern of color, such as chest shield,
  flank shield.

• Ink Spots, Paw Prints, Cat Tracks, and other
  small spots of color are another Tobiano trait
• Can occur anywhere on the body, are usually small
  and round, and look different, in shape, from
  the large color spots
• Spots are the same base color as the color of the
  Tobiano
• Spots might be a sign of homozygosity for TO
