Title: Five Styles of Parenting

1
Five Styles of Parenting
2
DEMOCRATIC PARENTS
  • The righteous man walks in his integrity his
children are blessed after him (Prov 207)
  • Children get to make decisions within boundaries
    set by parents
  • Even a child is known by his deeds, whether what
he does is pure and right (Prov 2011)

3
AUTHORITARIAN PARENTS
  • Jacob was an authoritarian parent
  • Jacob to Rueben Unstable as water, you shall
    not excel (Gen 494)
  • Jacob about Simeon and Levi Cursed be their
anger, for it is fierce (Gen 496-7)
  • Because I said so!

4
PERMISSIVE PARENTS
  • King Davids permissive parenting made it
possible for his son to rape his own sister (cf.
    2 Sam 1314)
  • David wept more for the killer than for the one
that was killed (2 Sam 1339)
  • Permissive parents think that loving their
    children means seldom correcting them

REGJECTING PARENTS
  • Hagar Let me not see the death of the boy (Gen
    2116)
  • Rebekahs brother and mother Let the young
woman stay with us a few days, at least ten
after that she may go (Gen 2455)
  • Isaac to Jacob (thinking it was Esau) Come near
now and kiss me, my son (Gen 2726)

6
REGJECTING PARENTS
  • Laban to Jacob And you did not allow me to kiss
my sons and my daughters . . . And early in the
morning Laban arose, and kissed his sons and
daughters and blessed them (Gen 3128, 55)
  • Then Joseph brought them near him, and he kissed
them and embraced them (Gen 4810-11)

7
UNINVOLVED PARENTS
  • We should no longer be children, tossed to and
fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine
    . . . . (Eph 414)
  • When I call to remembrance the genuine faith
that is in you, which dwelt first in your
grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am
persuaded is in you also (2 Tim 15 cf. 315)
