  • RECYCLING The process by which materials are
collected and used as raw materials for new
    products.
  • MANDATORY RECYCLING Programs which, by law,
require consumers to separate trash so that some
or all recyclable materials are recovered for
recycling rather than going to landfills.

Arguments against
  • We are not running out of landfill space
  • Natural resources are not depleting
  • Garbage is not toxic to our land or water
  • Recycling creates pollution
  • More expensive than conventional disposal
  • It doesnt need to be mandatory for people to do
    it

7
Where it is working Seattle
  • Nearly 60 of household waste is recycled
  • Clear, easily attainable information
  • Strict enforcement
  • Supportive residents

8
Where it isnt Philadelphia
  • In 1987 Philadelphia became the first major U.S.
city to pass a mandatory recycling law.
  • HOWEVER
  • The city has yet to exceed a 7 recycling rate.
  • Programs do not include entire city
  • No clear information on fines
  • Will not pick up plastic or cardboard

Not-So-Fun Facts
  • Enough aluminum is thrown away to rebuild our
commercial air fleet 4 times every year.
  • ONE aluminum can energy for a 100 watt light
    bulb for 3 ½ hours.
  • We use enough plastic wrap to wrap all of Texas
    every year.
  • Every month, we throw out enough glass bottles
and jars to fill up a giant skyscraper.
  • Glass can be reused a infinite amount of time.
  • Every year enough paper is thrown away to make a
12 ft. wall from NY to CA.
  • A ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees.

More than 20,000,000 Hershey's Kisses are wrapped
each day, using 133 square miles of tinfoil. All
that foil is recyclable, but not many people
realize it.

Since inception of the Recycling Program in
1989, Temple University has conserved the
equivalent of 103,000 trees that would have
otherwise been harvested to produce paper from
virgin wood pulp.
